Amid members leaving, church wants to revive
STARKEY—A small church congregation has become even smaller.  During many Sundays in May of this year, around six to nine people regularly attended the service at Starkey United Methodist Church. As of last week, that number is down to two, according to congregation member Mary Jane Lawrence.  Fellow congregation member Julia Jessup said in late May, a church meeting was called which the Rev. Richard Barton, superintendent of the Finger Lakes District of the United Methodist Church, attended. He announced that the church would get a new pastor, because decreasing membership was a concern.  Jessup said it was after this meeting that several congregation members decided to leave the church. Starkey town board 6/7/10
STARKEY—Starkey Supervisor Richard Burcaw told the board the town has received a work extension until the end of 2010 for energy saving projects. The town received $59,000 through the efforts of Sen. George Winner Jr. in 2009. The grant is through the New York Power Authority. Burcaw said the new radiant heat system already installed in the town barn has resulted in significant savings. Read More ...

STARKEY—The issue of the salt barn was discussed by the Starkey town board.  Supervisor RichardBurcaw said grant money for the facilities has dried up. Highway Superintendent Louis Seeley said the Town of Hornby built a 50 by 100 foot barn for $60,000, doing the work themselves.  Updates to the town zoning law were discussed. Code enforcement officer Brian Quackenbush said the planning board will be discussing steep slopes. Quackenbush said changes in the zoning map are marked on the map in the town hall. STARKEY—The Starkey town board voted to authorize Supervisor Richard Burcaw and highway superintendent Louis Seeley to sign an intermunicipal agreement with the Town of Reading under the Mutual Sharing Plan.   Burcaw also discussed the draft of a model road preservation local law that the county has requested towns to review. Read More ...
Starkey town board 02/04/10
STARKEY—The Starkey town board discussed a possible fireworks law or other options for managing firework displays. Code enforcement officer Brian Quackenbush said he feels the town needs some sort of law that says they can issue fireworks permits, then determine who will issue the permits. He will obtain further information on model ordinances.  Quackenbush also updated the board on actions of the zoning board. One suggestion is that a site that is zoned Manufacturing-1 be changed to Commercial, mainly due to the fact that the zone is now very small and is not being used for manufacturing. Read More ...
