Odessa beats Newfield, 36-26

ODESSA—It was a triumphant Homecoming night for the Odessa-Montour varsity football team, Friday, Oct. 1.
Not only did the team beat Newfield, 36-26, but kicker Jessica Rhodes won Homecoming queen. Rhodes was crowned during halftime, escorted by Tyler Goosen. The rest of the Homecoming court was Katie Ray, Malissa Richards, Allison Stamp and Rebecca Zafonte.
Kyle Bailey scored the first touchdown for Odessa within the first six minutes. Joe Markley also scored two points after touchdown.
Jeremy Vandracek scored three minutes later, after Odessa took possession of the ball from Newfield. The Indians repeated taking control of the ball by the end of the first quarter, to have Vandracek score again within the first minute of the second quarter.
Coach Jack McCauley said the team started the game well.
“We had three possessions in a row,” he explained.
By the time Newfield scored next, Odessa already had the lead at 22-6. The Indians’ Joe Markley scored the next touchdown on a five yard run, with Travis Wardwell kicking for one point.
In the last one minute and 42 seconds of the second quarter, Odessa intercepted the ball, lost control to Newfield, and then regained the ball. The rest of the game resulted in each team gaining some yardage, but many times losing the ball to the other side.
However, Odessa managed one last touchdown in the third quarter. Brandon Shisler scored with 5:50 left on the clock, and immediately hurt his knee. Newfield also scored once in the third quarter, and twice in the fourth quarter for a final score 36-26.
“I have to give Newfield credit,” said McCauley. “They came back in the second half. They made a game of it.”
