ODESSA—The Odessa-Montour girls varsity basketball team beat Newfield, 43-34, Tuesday, Feb. 22, and advanced in sectionals.
"We were very solid defensively all night, which turned out to be the big difference in the contest," said Coach Greg Gavich. Michelle Melanson led the Indians with 25 points, five rebounds, three assists, and five steals. Taylor Carey had eight points and eight rebounds. Katie Ray was next with seven points. Jocelyn Garrison followed with two points. Allison Stamp had one point and 10 rebounds. "It was not exactly a thing of beauty, but we survived and advanced and that's all that matters. Taylor Carey had all eight of her points in the second half to give us that second scoring option we desperately needed to stretch the lead out," said Gavich. "Michelle had an outstanding night for us, shooting 10-for-16 from the floor and 4-for-4 at the foul line." The girls will play the next sectional game at Harpusville, Friday, Feb. 25.
