Odessa-Montour school board 01/14/10

Meeting:  The Odessa-Montour school board met Thursday, Jan. 14, for one hour and 30 minutes.
Attendance:  Debra Harrington was the only board member absent.  There were seven members of the public in the audience.
Action:  The board approved increasing the Francis C. Ward Memorial Scholarship from $100 to $200.
Discussion without action:  Superintendent Jim Frame told the board Governor David Paterson would release the funds he was withholding from schools.  For Odessa-Montour, that amount was $55,000.
• The school board heard a report from third grade teachers on what is being taught at that grade level.  The teachers talked about and showed short videos of different areas in the curriculum, including, science and social studies.
• Hanlon Principal Chris Williams said they had done an informal survey of students about eating breakfast before school.  She said 16 percent of Hanlon students had not eaten breakfast and it was something that would be researched more.
• Frame also said the district wide renovation project received its final approval.
• Principal Sara Fontana gave a report on what B.C. Cate did during the holidays since the last board meeting.  She said second graders decorated the stage for the “Elves Impersonator” play.  She said that show tied into the character education for December, which was caring, concern for others, and tolerance.
• Frame said that re-piping of heating in the bus garage saved the school $24,000 in fuel costs last month.
• Frame also reported that he will be attending a workshop in Arizona in February.  He said it is fully funded and about how technology based schools can get funds.  Frame added he is one of 50 educators from across the U.S. that will go.
• A video will be made for B.C. Cate about Kindergarten readiness for students.
• Student council representatives told the board about the New York State Council on Leadership and Student Activities they attended.
Appointments/resignations:  The board approved tenure for Jenny Lewis, elementary teacher.
Upcoming meetings:  The school board will hold a workshop meeting, Thursday, Jan. 28 at 6 p.m.
