Odessa-Montour school board 02/26/09

Meeting:  The Odessa-Montour school board met Thursday, Feb. 26 for one hour and 35 minutes.
Attendance:  Damita Chamberlain was the only board member absent.  There were 25 people in the audience.
Action:  The board recognized the graduation of Justin Vanzile during the meeting.  Cake was served for his family present.
• The petition for the library tax on the May 2009 ballot was approved.
• The board accepted the donation of a 36 inch computer monitor from Helen Willet.
Discussion without action:  In his administrative report, Greg Conlon said the B.C. Cate Elementary School had gotten a $3,501 grant for “Listen, I’m Fluent.”
• Karen Gunning reported that high school students now had two more ACE options: “Essentials of Art” and “Drawing and Design III.”  She explained the “Essentials of Art” was reworked from a previous class, which now includes more work and focus on history.  Gunning also showed examples of the poster projects students have been doing in art which are displayed in the hallways.
• Tim Young said math assessment tests at Hanlon Elementary school would be kicked off with a pep rally.
• Superintendent Jim Frame said he would be meeting with seniors over the next two weeks to solidify graduation plans.
• Greg Dale gave a report on the budget.  He explained what the schools knew, including BOCES service costs, health insurance, and what items on the school’s budget that can be cut.  What they do not know is if any limitations will be put on the promised federal stimulus funds.
Bids/purchases over $1,000:  None.
Appointments/resignations:  The board appointed Richard Lapierre as the asbestos management plan Local Education Authority (LEA) designee.
Upcoming meetings:  The next regular school board meeting will be Thursday, March 12 at 7 p.m.
