Odessa-Montour school board 08/20/09

Meeting:  The Odessa-Montour Board of Education met Thursday, Aug. 20 for 30 minutes.
Attendance:  Damita Chamberlain was the only board member absent.  There were no members of the public in the audience.
Action:  The board approved the 2009-10 school tax levy as $4,551,831.
• “A Single Shard” was approved as a sixth grade textbook.  Board member Matt Walters said he would like to see the books and the teacher requesting the approval appear before the board in the future.  Superintendent Jim Frame said that normally happens, but did not this time because it was during summer recess.
Discussion without action:  Frame told the board they would be hearing a lot more about swine flu.  He said that the Department of Health will be offering voluntary inoculations to O-M, Watkins Glen, and Bradford school districts.
• Frame also presented the board with information on substitute teacher pay rates, including comparisons to other districts for the 2008-09 and 2009-10 school years.  The information was requested at the July 7 meeting.
Appointments/resignations:  The board accepted the retirement of Todd Oaks.  He was a cleaner for 26 years.
Upcoming meetings:  The next regular meeting will be Sept 10.  It is expected to start at 7 p.m., following an executive session at 6 p.m.
