Odessa school ups tax levy one percent

ODESSA—The Odessa-Montour school board of education approved the 2010-11 budget, at a special meeting, Thursday, April 15.
Greg Dale, business administrator, said the total budget equals $14,546,714, and has a one percent tax levy increase.  He added that last year, the budget equaled $14,203,785.
Dale said that the budget includes not replacing five positions, four teaching and one non-teaching.  Superintendent Jim Frame said the positions were ones where staff was lost and the school board is just not replacing them.  He explained they included a kindergarten teacher, so that next year there would be three sections instead of four.  The other positions not being replaced are a high school English teacher, high school academic intervention services (AIS) math teacher, school social worker and one custodial position.
Dale said that other than that, there are no other big cuts from one area.  He said that cuts were made to everything—supplies, materials, etc.—to help cover the loss in state aid.
Frame said the school board was very engaged in protecting programs, and that there was an awful lot of discussion.
