Penn Yan board elects Morehouse

PENN YAN (7/20/16)--The Penn Yan board of education held their reorganizational meeting Wednesday, July 13 in the elementary school cafeteria. During this meeting, the school board voted to elect Jeff Morehouse as the president of the school board. Kathy Guenther was also elected to serve as the vice president of the board. Both were reelected to their respective positions, having held them prior to the reorganizational meeting.
Morehouse, Guenther and Phyllis Record Bacher were each administered the oath of office during the meeting as well. The three were reelected to their respective positions during the annual school board and budget vote held by the district May 17.
In other business:
• The board affirmed several annual officer appointments during the meeting, along with a variety of designations, undertakings and miscellaneous procedures and policies.
• The board officially accepted the extended school day (ESD) grant during the meeting. Penn Yan will get $346,502 annually for five years to offer an additional hour and a half Monday through Thursday for students for pre-kindergarten through fifth grade. This can be used for additional academic help from teachers and aides and homework help labs, along with additional enrichment programs.
• The board approved two non-public school transportation requests during the meeting. One is for Lavern Zimmerman to attend the Torrey Ridge School and one is for Ayva Petersen to attend St. Michael School.
