Penn Yan opens ‘Into the Woods’ PENN YAN—The Penn Yan Academy Drama Club will be performing Into the Woods this weekend, starting Thursday, March 7 and running until Saturday, March 10. Show times are at 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, March 9, with a 2 p.m. matinee Sunday, March 10. There will also be a special Act I only showing at 2 p.m. Saturday where children are encouraged to attend. Directed by Anne Wunder, the cast consists of 21 students aided by an orchestra and backstage crew. Musical direction is handled by by Jessica Kinsey, who is assisted by Brian Cerow. Over 200 people attend gun law meeting PENN YAN—Over 200 people attended an informational meeting about the New York Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement (SAFE) Act at the Penn Yan Elks Lodge, Wednesday, Feb. 13. The event was sponsored by the Yates County chapter of Shooter’s Committee on Political Education. The presenters were opposed to various parts, if not all, of the SAFE Act. Sheriff Ron Spike spoke about how the law affects ownership of firearms. Assemblymen Tom O-Mara (R,C-Big Flats), Phil Palmesano (R,C,I-Corning), and Bill Nojay (R,I-Pittsford) talked about how the legislation passed. Read More ... By: David Austen |
School budget shows 3.46 percent levy increase PENN YAN—The Penn Yan school board announced during their first public budget forum Wednesday, Feb. 13 their draft budget contains a 3.46 percent increase in the tax levy and the elimination of eight positions for the 2013-14 school year. The $32,380,759 total draft budget is up $688,260 from the 2012-13 budget of $31,692,499. Penn Yan sets hearing on tax cap override PENN YAN—The Penn Yan Village Board voted to set a public hearing on a local law renewing their tax cap waiver for 2013-14, during the regular meeting Tuesday, Dec. 18. Penn Yan will see more retail activity PENN YAN—The Finger Lakes Economic Development Center (FLEDC) met Friday, Dec. 21 and announced several area business plans for downtown Penn Yan and Lake Street Plaza. Chief Executive Officer Steve Griffin said Lake Street Wine and Spirits will be relocating to the vacant building at 132 Water St. Griffin said they will be occupying the first floor of the white brick building, formerly Carey’s Rental, between the warehouses and the New York State Electric and Gas (NYSEG) building.
