Penn Yan library reopens

PENN YAN—The Penn Yan Public Library will celebrate its renovation project with an event from 2 until 4 p.m., June 13. The public is encouraged to attend.
One after another, people walked in the door at the Penn Yan Public Library June 8 and stopped right in their tracks. The universal reaction was either “Oh my gosh,” “Wow” or a similar exclamation. Closed several weeks for renovations, the historical building on Main Street in the village opened Monday with a new yet familiar look. The staff and materials are the same, but the arrangement of library materials, staff and surroundings have changed.
One of the most striking changes is the lighting, which illuminates every corner of the sparkling main floor. During the renovations, all library materials had to be moved so that walls could be painted and new carpeting installed along with the new lighting. New bathrooms, and new doors were also added during the past few weeks.
Prior to closing in April, patrons were encouraged to take out as many circulating materials as they wished, leaving a smaller amount of materials to be moved. June 8 many of those books, tapes and magazines came flooding into the building along with scores of patrons glad to have full access to the library again.
A New York State Public Library Construction Grant, matched by funds from local donations paid for the new bathrooms and doors and electric work. Independent Energy Efficiency Program for customers of New York Municipal Electric Utilities paid for the new lighting.
The next phase of the improvement will be a new roof for the original Carnegie building, then new lighting, carpet, paint and removal of two drop ceilings and completion of the public meeting room. That room, located in a portion of the Carnegie building, will offer space for programming for all ages.
