Penn Yan volleyball beats Bath

PENN YAN—The Penn Yan Varsity volleyball team won the pre-quarterfinals Section V tournament against Bath, Thursday, Oct. 29.
The Lady Mustangs won 25-10, 25-12, 18-24, 24-17.  The team only lost the third game. 
Penn Yan started the first game by scoring the first points on the serves.  Bath scored first in the other three games.
Penn Yan Coach Kerry Griswald Fitch said the Mustangs weren’t as consistent as they usually are.  However, at the end she said she was happy.
“The fourth game, that’s our game,” she said.
The Lady Mustangs will play at Attica, Saturday, Oct. 31 for the Class B quarterfinals Section V tournament.

The Penn Yan Mustangs finished the 2009 football season with a loss to Batavia in the Connors & Ferris Bowl IV, Oct. 30. The score was 55-38, and was a game filled with offense and turnovers. Penn Yan had 425 yards of offense; Batavia had 455 yards. But Penn Yan had seven turnovers which either ended drives or gave Batavia the ball with short yardage situations.
Scott Miller set a Penn Yan record with five touchdown passes. Miller completed 11 of 35 passes for 264 yards. Nate Nichols had seven receptions for 214 yards and four touchdowns, and set a record for the most touchdowns caught in a season with 13. Elliott Eckerson had two receptions for 89 yards and one touchdown. Adam Trombley threw two completions for 71 yards. Trombley also had six carries for 66 yards.
Chris Allison led the defense with 15 tackles (13 unassisted). Jamil Modaffari had 17 tackles (11 unassisted). Dan Guererri had 11 tackles (eight unassisted). Nichols had eight tackles (seven unassisted).
The Mustangs end the season with a record of 2-7.
