Penn Yan names Griffin homecoming queen

PENN YAN--The Penn Yan Central School District held their annual homecoming festivities, culminating in the naming of Megan Griffin as the 2016 homecoming queen, Saturday, Oct. 8. The ceremony took place during halftime at the football game against Wayne, where the Mustangs lost 42-6.
The Mustangs received the ball to start the game but were forced to punt after three plays. Wayne scored first on a 33-yard touchdown run to go up 7-0. After the Mustangs moved the ball into Wayne territory, they turned the ball over on downs, which led to a drive that culminated in a two-yard touchdown pass to put the game at 14-0 to end the first quarter.
Wayne would continue to shut out the Mustangs throughout the second quarter of play, scoring twice more to take a 28-0 lead into halftime.
During halftime, Griffin and Bailey Strong were selected from the homecoming court and were crowned by last year's winners Cassie Lafler and Reid McMichael. The rest of the court included Sydney Bloom (escorted by Cade Curbeau), Emma Harling (escorted by Austin Blumbergs), Hannah Keech (escorted by Nick Hoover) and Emily Wunder (escorted by Austin Lafferty).
The two teams traded punts to open the third quarter, followed by the Mustangs defense forcing a turnover on downs to retake possession of the ball. Penn Yan's score came on the following drive on a 45-yard screen pass to Dylan Stape to put the score at 28-6. However, Wayne scored on a 12-yard run their next drive to take a 35-6 lead. An interception later, Wayne scored again on a one play touchdown pass to go up 42-6. Each team would go scoreless in the fourth quarter, sealing the victory for Wayne.
The Mustangs fall to 1-5 on the season heading into next week's away contest against Newark Friday, Oct. 14 at 7:15 p.m.
