Penn Yan opens ‘Into the Woods’

PENN YAN—The Penn Yan Academy Drama Club will be performing Into the Woods this weekend, starting Thursday, March 7 and running until Saturday, March 10. Show times are at 7 p.m. Thursday through Saturday, March 9, with a 2 p.m. matinee Sunday, March 10. There will also be a special Act I only showing at 2 p.m. Saturday where children are encouraged to attend.
Directed by Anne Wunder, the cast consists of 21 students aided by an orchestra and backstage crew. Musical direction is handled by by Jessica Kinsey, who is assisted by Brian Cerow.
Into the Woods is a Tony Award-winning musical written by James Lapine with music and lyrics by Stephen Sondheim that premiered on Broadway in 1987. It is based on well known fairy tales and includes Cinderella (played by Abby Arnold), Little Red Riding Hood (Brittany Leiter), Rapunzel (Leah VanSon), Jack and the Beanstalk (J. J. Warren), and a new adventure about a baker (Jay Vollmer) and his wife (Hannah Hotaling) trying to lift a witch’s (Rachel Dillon) curse. Wunder said the play addresses what happens “after the happily ever after,” in these fairy tales as the characters from each cross paths in their adventures.
Tickets are $9 for adults and $8 for students and seniors. Presale tickets are available at Pinckney’s Hardware and Long’s Cards and Books for $8 adults and $7 students and seniors.
