Meeting: Penn Yan Central School District board of education met for approximately 30 minutes, Wednesday Dec. 9.
Attendance: Board member James Multer Jr. was absent. Nineteen students and members of the public were in the audience.
Action: Authorized the district to enter into a contract with Online Surplus Government Auctions to liquidate surplus items. Superintendent of Schools Ann Orman said the company will charge seven percent of the surplus items liquidated. She said, “I thought we would try them. There is a lot of cost each year in terms of staff time.” Surplus items had been sold at district tag sales in the past.
Discussion without action: Heard an update on the capital project at the Academy from Jim Higgins of LeChase Construction.  He told the board two major milestones have been reached with completion of the East wing and gym. He  said the center hall will be closed to take the old gym, adding, “Everything looks good.” Following Higgins’ report, Orman said the opening night of the new gym has been changed. The last basketball game in the old gym will be Dec. 18 and the first game in the new gym will be Jan. 16.
• The board heard a report on the Senior trip to New York City that was accompanied by a video of the areas the students visited. Senior class advisor Kiki Seago said, “It was a wonderful experience. A lot of good things happened.” Board vice-president Kathy Guenther said, “Thank you for taking the time to go with the kids.” Orman added, “You can take them anywhere.” Turning to the students, she said, “We’re proud of you.”
Bids/purchases over $1,000: Approved the recommended LP school bus bid award in the amount $30,864 per year from Chittenango-based New York Bus Sales. The bus will be leased for two years and the district will receive state aid for 65 percent of it.
