Penn Yan school board 4/27/11

Meeting:  The Penn Yan Central School District Board of Education met Wednesday, April 27, for 35 minutes.
Attendance:  All board members were present.  There were two members of the public in the audience.
Action: The board approved the Wayne-Finger Lakes BOCES 2011-12 tentative administrative budget (part one) equaling $2,890,895.
• The school board approved creation of a Penn Yan Academy Hall of Fame Award.  
• The board approved the Yates County Chapter of the Future Farmers of America to go on a field trip to the Cobleskill State University of New York, May 5 to 7.
• Penn Yan will now be able to accept more donations for the Academy’s Science Throwdown from the PYA 3D Living Club.
• A $200 Yates County Arts Center community grant was accepted for a fifth grade community awareness project.  The board also accepted another $200 donation from the Nord Family Foundation for the Helping Us Build Better Assets (HUBBA) Community Service Day.  It was a matching contribution to one made by Kathleen and Scott Peterson.
• The board declared obsolete computers and equipment as surplus.  Assistant Superintendent for Business Doug Tomandl was authorized to dispose of the equipment as he sees fit.
• The board created a long-term substitute teacher aide position, effective May 2 to June 24, 2011.
Discussion without action:  District Clerk Katie Dean and Assistant to the Superintendent Becki Bailey spoke about the board going paperless.  Dean said in an effort to save money and go green, board members will have access to documents digitally through the district Web site.  She said the district will try to implement this over the next couple of board meetings.
Bids/purchases over $1,000:  The school selected a $20,727 bid from Albany Dodge for a 2011 Dodge Caravan.
Appointments/resignations:  The board approved Mark Perry as a custodial worker, Abraham Guerrero as systems analyst, Christopher Sullivan as social studies long-term substitute, and Jenna Hojnowski and Melissa Lamphier both as National Junior Honor Society advisors.
• Diana Niver resigned as food service helper.
• The board approved an unpaid leave of absence for teaching assistant Lee Merritt, May 1 to June 30, 2011.
Upcoming meetings:  The next school board meeting is Wednesday, May 4, at 7 p.m.
