YATES COUNTY--The United Way of Northern Yates County has set its annual fundraising campaign for 2015. The group will work to raise $42,500 for 11 area non-profits serving Yates County residents. United Way board member Marcia Rogoff said she has been involved in United Way for some 30 years, adding she would like to see more participation in this year's drive from community businesses.
"Soldiers and Sailors Hospital employees are among our strongest supporters along with Keuka College and many local businesses and individuals," Rogoff said. "However if we can get the county employees along with the employees at [the Arc of Yates] and the Penn Yan Central School District on board, we could meet our goal of $42,500 easily."
The non-profits receiving funds are as follows:
• Safe Harbors, $7,000.
• Rainbow Junction Child Care Center, $6,000.
• Christmas for the Needy, $5,000.
• Yates Youth Services, $2,725.
• Food for the Needy, $2,500.
• Finger Lakes Addiction Counseling and Rehabilitation Agency, $2,400.
• Child and Family Resources, $2,000.
• Big Brother/Big Sister, $1,200.
• Literacy Volunteers, $1,100.
• Red Cross, $1,000.
• Girl Scouts, $900.
The remaining $10,675 will go to cover uncollectible pledges and United Way expenses. Rogoff said they will continue the drive until the goal has been met, although she added it has been difficult to raise the necessary funds as of late.
"The last few years have been very difficult for many in Penn Yan, and also for United Way," according to the United Way board of directors. "We have not achieved our goal for several years and have supplemented the donations made with money from a bequest we received many years ago and invested to assure all allocations could be met. That fund is now depleted so, if we do not meet our goal the allocations will be less for all organizations."
