Pleasantville defeats Penn Yan for state title

PITTSFORD-The number one state-ranked Pleasantville Panthers showed how they earned that position, Saturday, June 9 at St. John Fisher College against the Penn Yan Mustangs. The final score was 16-2 with the Panthers being named the Class D state champions.
The historically high-scoring Pleasantville team got on the scoreboard first, but strong defense by Penn Yan and some impressive saves by goalie Jeff Kinyoun gave the impression the Mustangs had Pleasantville under control. Austin Blumbergs then scored for Penn Yan on an assist by Conner Fingar. Pleasantville and Penn Yan would exchange goals before the first quarter ended. Colton Smith registered the second goal for the Mustangs bringing the game score to 2-2.
However, the second quarter and the second half of the game showed the relentless scoring capability of the Panthers. Penn Yan's two come-from-behind victories to reach the title game kept many hopeful for a three-peat, but that wasn't in the cards Saturday. Pleasantville put up five goals in the second and eight in the third quarter to effectively win the championship game. An additional goal in the fourth, while holding Penn Yan scoreless, made the final score 16-2.
Pleasantville consistently put up a challenge during face-offs and once they had possession would use quick passes and shots to build the score. The team averaged 14 goals per game this season.
Penn Yan ends an excellent season as the state runner-up with a 15-6 record.
