'Please don't sink:' the mantra for the Waterfront Festival

WATKINS GLEN—Despite the rain, 95 cardboard boats raced in the 16th Annual Waterfront Festival, Saturday, June 20.  This was the most boats to take on the regatta, ending up in 38 heats.
Spectators crowded the waterfront along the entire marina, even along the rock outcropping, just to see the action.    A few spectators cheered on the racers from their boats docked at the marina.
Even as the weather got worse, the races continued.  Most of the boats that did, and did not, make it were unceremoniously disposed of in a dumpster after the races.  The festival also featured music and vendors at the Seneca Harbor Park.

The judges also gave awards for multiple categories:
• Fastest Elapsed Time Single hull (two or more people) - “Not All In the Family”
• Fastest Elapsed Time Multi hull (two or more people) - “SS Schuyler I”
• Fastest Kids Boat (under age 12) - “Liquid Wisdom”
• Fastest Teens Boat (ages 13 to 18) - “Rectangle”
• Best Construction – S.S. “Cutterhead”
• Best Lookin’ Boat – “Yellow Submarine”
• “Titanic” Sinking - “Getaway”
• Best Boat Name – “Queen of DeNile”
• Best “Theme” – “Operation Guthrie”
• Judges Choice – “Screamin’ Sea men”
