Proposal to name Tyrone post office for Scott

TYRONE—State Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand and Congressman Tom Reed (R-Corning) introduced legislation to designate the United States Postal Facility in Tyrone the “Specialist Christopher Scott Post Office Building.” Specialist Scott was killed Sept. 3, 2011 in Kandahar, Afghanistan at the age of 21 while serving in the United States Army.
“Specialist Scott personified patriotism and gave the ultimate sacrifice for our nation while fighting in Afghanistan,” Reed said. “His service to our nation is something we can never forget and we can pay tribute to his memory by renaming the Tyrone Post Office in his honor as a way to help to preserve his legacy as one of New York’s heroes.”
“Specialist Scott is a true hometown hero who will always remain in the hearts of his loved ones and the Finger Lakes community,” Gillibrand said. “He answered the highest call and made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, serving with bravery, honor and integrity. Designating the Tyrone Post Office in his name will honor his legacy in the community he loved for all to remember.”
Spc. Scott graduated from Dundee Central School in 2009 and began service in the Army. Scott was assigned to units including the 561st Military Police Company, 716th Military Police Battalion, and the 101st Sustainment Brigade.
While serving in the Army, he earned the National Defense Service Medal, Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, Army Service Ribbon, Afghanistan Campaign Medal with Bronze Service Star, and the Overseas Service Ribbon. Posthumously, Specialist Scott was awarded the Bronze Star, Purple Heart, Army Good Conduct Medal, NATO Medal and the Combat Action Badge.
The legislation would rename the United State Postal Facility located at 815 County Road 23 in Tyrone the “Specialist Christopher Scott Post Office Building.”
