Remember our veterans this Friday

TRI-COUNTY AREA—Veterans Day is just one day set aside each year for us to honor our veterans. Veterans Day this year is Friday, Nov. 11, and there are several events scheduled.
The Penn Yan Veterans of Foreign Wars and American Legion posts will hold a Veterans Day service at the Yates County Courthouse, Friday, Nov. 11, at 11 a.m. After a short service, the VFW will host a lunch.
Dundee will host Veterans Day programs. The Dundee Central School music department is hosting a Veteran’s Day concert in the school auditorium, Wednesday, Nov. 9, with performances by the junior and senior bands and choruses. It starts at 7 p.m. The elementary bands and choruses will perform at an assembly Thursday, Nov. 10, at 1:30 p.m.
The St. Michael School in Penn Yan will be offering a Veterans Day program at 11 a.m., Thusday, Nov. 10.
Keuka College will mark Veterans Day Friday, Nov. 11, with presentations by two faculty members and a prayer of remembrance by the college chaplain. Beginning at noon in Norton Chapel, Professor of History Sander Diamond will discuss how our veterans have been memorialized at home and on former battlefields overseas while Chris Leahy, associate professor of history, will provide an overview of Memorial Day.
After the chapel presentations, College Chaplain Rev. Eric Detar will offer a prayer of remembrance at the World War II memorial located near Lightner Library. Erected by members of the Political Science and History Club in 2005, the memorial commemorates the 60th anniversary of VE-Day and recognizes the college’s nursing program “that was created during the war years as our College’s major contribution to the war effort,” said Diamond.
According to Diamond, Veteran’s Day “honors our veterans on the day when the guns of World War I fell silent on the western front at 11 a.m. on the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918. It was on this day that the Germans signed the armistice, and well into the 20th century this day was called Armistice Day.”
Dresden will host a ceremony at the new veterans memorial on Friday at 60 Cornelia St. It will start at 11 a.m. Assemblyman Philip Palmesano and Senator Tom O’Mara are expected to be present.
The annual Veterans Day Service at Watkins Glen will be held in front of the Schuyler County Courthouse at 11 a.m., Nov. 11. The guest speaker will be Sgt. Keith Caslin, who is currently serving in the Army National Guard. Caslin is a veteran of the Afghanistan conflict, having been assigned duty there from 2010 to 2011. The event is sponsored by the veterans organizations of Schuyler County.
The Roswell McDaniels Post of the American Legion is having a special ceremony at the Veterans’ Honor Roll located next to Community Bank in Hammondsport on Friday. The legion has updated the Honor Roll to include all war veterans from the town of Urbana, including the veterans of the Civil War. The ceremony will begin at 11 a.m.
