JERUSALEM—Some 54 residents attended a meeting hosted by the Jerusalem Local Waterfront Revitalization Strategy Steering Committee on Tuesday, Nov. 19. The meeting was held at the Branchport Library to discuss future plans for waterfront development in the area. The town of Jerusalem is currently working on preparing a “waterfront revitalization strategy” for the Keuka Lake and Sugar Creek waterfronts. The purpose of the plan is to compliment the development of the Finger Lakes Museum and the growth and transformation of Keuka College. During the meeting, residents gave their ideas regarding public access, recreation, resource protection, Main Street development and mixed-use development.
The Keuka Lake Association (KLA) states that funding has been received for the waterfront revitalization strategy from the New York State Department of State (DOS), with additional support from the Finger Lakes Museum and Keuka College. The plan will include community-based goals focused around the input from local residents. Among ideas for development will also be suggestions for ways to protect the Keuka Lake waterfront resources.
Jerusalem Councilman Mike Steppe said there was a great turnout for the event, and everyone who attended felt comfortable providing their guidance and input regarding the Keuka Lake waterfront.
“The message was well received,” Steppe said. “Everyone has a concern for the waterfront and water quality.”
The steering committee has begun working with Ingalls Planning & Design and Trowbridge Wolf Michaels Landscape Architects as consulting firms. The planning workshop is listed as an early phase in the development of the town’s waterfront strategy. Steppe said there will be similar meetings in the future, with the next round being planned for March and April of 2014.
