SCHUYLER COUNTY--Schuyler County residents will soon have a new way to get to work. Schuyler County has joined with Chemung and Steuben Counties in offering residents a free way to join a carpool.
The program called "rideshare" focuses on the daily commuter and is designed to allow people to sign up and seek a ride match from either a radius base or along their path of travel.
Schuyler County users can sign up to be riders, drivers or both by registering in the online ride-matching system at www.transportationlink-line.org.
When announcing the initiative, County Administrator Tim O'Hearn stated, "We are thrilled to be the latest participant in this innovative program. In addition to providing additional mobility modes, this will offer our residents more employment options by reducing the barrier lack of transportation creates for job seekers."
The program is maintained by New York Department of Transportation and has been successfully operating in the downstate area for many years.
In 2014 Chemung and Steuben Counties were chosen to pilot a rural rideshare program. Based on the success of the pilot program, the 511NY Southern Tier Rideshare was created.
