SCHUYLER COUNTY—Voting on the Watkins Glen and Odessa-Montour Central School District budgets and board members for 2014-15 will take place next Tuesday, May 20.
The Watkins Glen budget vote will be held from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m in the high school office lobby.  Odessa-Montour’s vote will be held in the Hanlon elementary school, room 12, between noon and 8 p.m.  Residents are asked to bring photo identification. Residents can vote if they are at least 18 years old and have been a resident of either school district since April 20, 2014.
The Watkins Glen total budget is $24,047,481, up $697,461 compared to the current year.  The district is proposing a 2.76 percent tax levy increase. (For related story, see page 2.)
Residents will also vote on board of education members.  Seven candidates are running for three open board seats at Watkins Glen.  Listed on the ballot will be Annette Bascom, Jannica Moskal, Kristina Hansen, Keith Caslin, incumbent Gloria Brubaker, Kris Clarkson, and Jim Somerville.  Residents are asked to vote for three people.
“As a school community, we are very pleased to be able to offer this budget with the confidence that it meets the needs of our educational program while maintaining fiscal preparedness for the future,” said Watkins board President Mike Myers.  “As taxpayers, parents and community members, your partnership has been essential.”
Odessa-Montour’s total budget equals $15,491,037, an increase of $341,357.  Odessa experienced an increase in state operating and building aid.  The district also proposes using $526,221 from the fund balance to offset costs.  This results in a .28 percent tax levy decrease.
Odessa also has two open board seats.  Newcomers Christian Maphis and Jennifer Mosher are seeking election to the seats unopposed.
Both Watkins Glen and Odessa-Montour saved costs from the shared transportation services Watkins now provides for both districts.  Watkins’ transportation costs will be reduced $80,539 in 2014-15 and Odessa’s reduction will be $70,529.
