DUNDEE, PENN YAN--Both the Dundee and Penn Yan school boards held organizational meetings last week, where they swore in the recently elected members to new terms. Each new board member swore their oath of office during the meeting and issued their signature to become official members of the school board.
The Dundee Central School District swore in Wendy Gibson and Andrew Simmons to the seats they earned in the May budget and trustee election. Both are newcomers to the Dundee school board, replacing former members John Frederick and Matthew Camacho, who did not run for reelection due to moving out of the district. The Dundee school board also elected officers during their meeting. School Board President James Koehler was reelected to his position by the board, while board member James Hill was elected as vice president of the board. Hill is replacing Frederick in the position. Board member Kristen VanValkenburg was also elected to be a voting delegate to the New York State School Boards Association Convention.
Penn Yan swore in three members to their school board during their Wednesday, July 1 meeting. Incumbents Elizabeth Warren and Loni Terpolilli were both reelected during the May budget and trustee election. Challenger Renee Bloom also won a seat during the election and was sworn in Wednesday. While Bloom was a challenger, she has previously held a seat on the Penn Yan school board. Penn Yan also elected their board officers during their meeting. Board President Jeff Morehouse was reelected to the seat by the board. Each school board also appointed staff and faculty to several different positions during their respective meetings.

• Superintendent Kelly Houck said from what she has heard at the state level, there is "a very good possibility the tax cap will be set at 0 percent next year." She said this is not yet official, but added it would have a negative impact on all school districts. "It will be very difficult for everyone to face a 0 percent increase," Houck said, with Koehler added the school was smart to go with their 3 percent tax levy increase in this past budget.
• Houck said this year's first home football game of the season is scheduled for the same day as the Dundee Scottish Festival, which will be held along village streets this year. She said the school has to make sure to section off their parking lots to ensure there is still parking available for those attending the game.
