Local students hear from anti-bullying speaker
SCHUYLER COUNTY—High school students at both Watkins Glen and Odessa-Montour heard an anti-bullying presentation, Thursday, Feb. 7. Jamie Nabozny, anti-bully advocate, spoke at each school.  Nabozny shared his own story about being bullied in middle and high school, while in Ashland, Wis.  Nabozny explained he was bullied because he was gay.  Students first watched a documentary called “Bullied,” which chronicles Nabozny’s story.  He was recently named a Defender of Human Rights by the Robert F. SCHUYLER COUNTY—Representatives from the the county government, municipalities, and school districts in Schuyler held their first joint meeting to review the organization and delivery of services, Tuesday, Jan. 8. The officials were joined by Cornell University representatives who facilitated the session. Schuyler County flu cases less than many surrounding areas, Yates double from last year
FINGER LAKES—Schuyler County Public Health is reporting a slight increase in influenza cases, while at the same time Gov. Andrew Cuomo has declared a Public Health Emergency for all of New York State in response to this year’s flu season. Schuyler County Public Health Director Marcia Kasprzyk reports the number of flu cases is up “at least 10 percent” over last winter. She explained the county keeps track of the positively diagnosed influenza cases, but added not everyone who goes to a physician is tested. “It’s very contagious, even with the vaccine,” said Kasprzyk. There have been no flu-related deaths so far. However, in neighboring Yates County, officials have reported the number of cases is currently more than double that of last winter. Read More ...

Schuyler County looks to expand bus service
SCHUYLER COUNTY—Schuyler County is looking to expand the public transit system to Elmira and Corning and replace the county’s buses. Schuyler is re-applying for two federal grants: up to $110,200 for 2013 and $113,500 for 2014. SCHUYLER COUNTY—Schuyler County and the villages of Watkins Glen and Montour Falls were awarded a $300,000 grant towards building a new, intermunicipal wastewater treatment plant, Wednesday, Dec. 19.  Schuyler was one of 62 projects in the Southern Tier approved for funds by New York State’s Regional Economic Development Councils. Read More ...
