Schuyler will showcase county's green initiatives

SCHUYLER COUNTY—Even though it is so longer Earth Day, Schuyler County will hold a tour of county facilities, May 6, for the public to see what measures are being taken for “Greening our Future.”
The tours will be of the county courthouse on Franklin Street in Watkins Glen, 9 to 3 p.m. and the Rural Urban Center in Montour Falls, 10 to 2 p.m. The public is invited to both locations for the third year of this event. Tim O’Hearn, Schuyler County administrator, said the different agencies involved with the environment will show what they have been going to implement green procedures. The day will also include tours of part of the court house that is currently being remodeled. O’Hearn said part of the work is improving heating and putting in “green” windows. He explained it will save an estimated 40 percent in energy costs.
Three of the agencies that will be present are Soil and Water, Watershed Protection and the Environmental Management Council. O’Hearn said Watershed Protection is involved because that agency oversees septic systems.
Soil and Water will be present because of their work on erosion control, preservation of resources and because they deal with the impacts of water run-off. The Environmental Management Council will be present information on their advisory roll. O’Hearn said the council weights in on matters that pertain to the environment, providing a “check and balance.”
O’Hearn said the county’s hybrid vehicle will also be on display.
