HAMMONDSPORT--The village of Hammondsport will see a host of both plane and boating enthusiasts visit this coming weekend, as both the Glenn H. Curtiss Museum and the Finger Lakes Boating Museum will be hosting events.
The annual Seaplane Homecoming will take place at Depot Park Saturday, Sept. 13. Sponsored by the Curtiss Museum, the event runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and will feature several sea planes landing and taking off from the waters of Keuka Lake near the park. At 2 p.m. the pilots will participate in a "salute to Glenn Curtiss" seaplane parade around Keuka Lake, extending their southern loop directly over the Curtiss gravesite in the Pleasant Valley Cemetery. Admission to the event is free and there will also be food and souvenirs available for purchase at the event.
The Finger Lakes Boating Museum will also be holding its grand opening Saturday, Sept. 13. Located at 8231 Pleasant Valley Road, the grand opening will take place at 11 a.m. with the ribbon cutting at 11:30 and will feature food and wine tastings. The museum had initially opened to the public June 21 and is open from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. every day. The grand opening comes after some 18 years of work by the museum members.
"You just can't say enough good things about perseverance," Museum President Ed Wightman said. "[...] We have some public officials coming in to cut the ribbon and be a part of it. I know Congressman Tom Reed (R-Corning) will be there and the members of original museum board. We are trying to do something grand like a ribbon cutting ceremony after having a summer of a dry run. It feels really, really good [opening after 18 years]. It is quite rewarding."
