SENECA LAKE—Anthony Road Wine Company, located along Route 14, recently announced a partnership with the New York Yankees. The team has adopted the winery’s Dry Riesling Reserve as a team branded wine, making it the only Major League Baseball (MLB) team branded wine from New York.
“We were approached by an organization — Wine BY Design (WBD) — that is working with Major League Baseball to introduce team branded wines,” Anthony Road owner John Martini said. “There are, I’ve been told other team wines out there and there are two other New York Yankee branded wines made in California. We are, to my knowledge, the only New York wine in the program.”
Martini said the wine can be found at Anthony Road as well as on MLB.com/wine. The Yankees, Red Sox, Rangers and Giants all have team wine collections, along with an MLB All-Star Game collection. The other two California wines included in the Yankees’ collection include a Chardonnay and a Cabernet Savignon. Martini said he would be willing to partner with any team sport, and hopes to be a long-term supplier for the Yankees.
“We would be happy to supply wines for any New York team in any sport,” Martini said. ”We do hope that it continues to be a long-term relationship. [It is] great to be associated with the Yankees as they are the team I root for. We have to cover the licensing fees and WBD expenses.”
According to the Anthony Road website, the 2013 Finger Lakes Dry Riesling costs $24.99. The back label reads, “Be it stickball on the streets of Brooklyn, the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown or the Bombers on a Sunday in the Bronx, New York is sacred baseball country. In recent decades, it has also become great wine country, from Long Island to Lake Erie. The New York Yankees are thrilled to honor New York state in presenting this crisp, tangy and refreshing dry Riesling, produced from Riesling grapes grown in the Finger Lakes region and typically harvested in October, when baseball is at its best.”
