GENEVA--The "Renegade 7" team from Endicott, New York won the seventh annual "Seneca7" relay race Sunday, April 30. The 77.7-mile route around the lake began in downtown Geneva and ended at Geneva's lakefront park.
Teams from 10 states, as well as Canada competed. The winning time was 7:34:02.
The course circled Seneca Lake, traveling through Ontario, Seneca, Schuyler, and Yates Counties, including the village of Watkins Glen.
Some teams used motorized vehicles to travel between exchange points, while others bicycled. Seneca7 race co-director Jeff Henderson said, "This year we allowed bike teams to register a day early, as we have in the past, to reward them for selecting a gasoline-free option."
The race has become increasingly popular over the years. This year's roster filled within 45 minutes on the first day of registration, Oct. 31, 2016. "We'd love to meet the participant demand for a larger race, but the field size is limited by the exchange point parking lots, so every team that selects to use pedal power to accompany their runner is very much appreciated and rewarded," said Henderson.
Race organizers offered early registration to teams identified as having competed in all previous editions of the race, making this their seventh year.
"We definitely appreciate the loyalty of our seven-year teams," says race co-director Jackie Augustine. "This year we decided to do something special to reward them."
