Senecas lose to Spencer Van-Etten, 43-40

WATKINS GLEN—The Watkins boys basketball team fell to Spencer Van-Etten, 43-40, Friday, Dec. 4.
Both teams fought for the lead throughout the entire game.  Even though Spencer Van-Etten scored first in the first 20 seconds, Watkins scored three times directly after that with a three pointer by Stuart Cook.  The Panthers tied it back with the Senecas at 9-9, after Spencer Van-Etten scored their own three point shot.  The end of the first quarter had Watkins in the lead, 14-12.
However, Spencer Van-Etten would take the lead by the end of the last three quarters, even if Watkins was close behind.  The Senecas trailed by one point at halftime, 23-22.  Watkins' Connor Fitzsimmons brought it that close with a free throw shot.
Watkins Glen briefly took the lead at the start of the third quarter.  Andrew Conklin scored twice and Cook once to make it 28-25.  The Senecas remained in the lead until the end of the quarter until Spencer Van-Etten scored another three point shot, making the score 37-36.
The end of the game was no less tense.  With the score at 41-40, in the Panther's favor, and 30 seconds on the clock, the Senecas had a chance to take the lead with two free throws by Travis Waite.  However, neither shots made it into the basket.  Spencer Van-Etten had their own chance at two free throws after that and made both.  Watkins had possession of the ball following that, but could not make another basket.  The end score was 43-40, Spencer Van-Etten.
Watkins Glen basketball team will play again Dec. 8 at Newfield.
