Sink or float, waterfront festival has plenty of both
WATKINS GLEN—Will it float it or is it doomed to sink? That was what people were wondering at the 18th Annual Watkins Glen Waterfront Festival and Cardboard Boat Regatta this past weekend. Racers navigated creative cardboard boats through the Seneca Harbor, Saturday. The event started Friday, June 17, with music and games. On Saturday, spectators cheered on the boats at the race. Last week, Watkins Glen third graders also got into the cardboard boat race mood with a regatta of their own. On Thursday, June 9, a total of 92 students raced in the school pool. Best Boat Time went to “The Titanic Sisters” (Bella Bond, Haley Dean, and Madelyn Suddaby) with 1:04. Brandon Beaumont and Gabriel Planty won Best Boat Design with “The Green Bean.” All third-graders were given specially designed shirts. The regatta is part of a math and science unit on buoyancy, displacement, capacity and measurement. Students worked in teams to design and construct boats. During the regatta, students attempted to row these boats across the pool.
