SPORTS RECAP: Postseason games 2/17/16

Senecas advance in sectionals
WATKINS GLEN-The Senecas' boys varsity basketball team advanced in the Class C Sectional tournament with a win over Marathon, Wednesday, Feb. 17. The final score was 66-53.
Justin Kelly scored 19 points and had eight rebounds, followed by Michael Taylor with 12 points and six rebounds. Jacob Carocci recorded 11 points and nine rebounds. Max Schimizzi added 10 points and 12 rebounds. Parker Pangallo earned eight. Connor Seeley-Ion scored six.
Watkins plays next Friday, Feb. 19 at Greene.

Watkins, Odessa swimmers qualify for sectional finals
WATKINS GLEN-The Watkins boys varsity swim team will have 10 swimmers and Odessa-Montour will have eight competing in Saturday's Section IV Class C finals, after qualifying in the preliminaries, Wednesday, Feb. 17.
The Watkins 200 medley relay team (Matt Doppel, Lucas Wickham, Will Fitzsimmons, and Dakota Cole), the 200 free relay team (Doppel, Jacob Slater, Wickham, and Aaron Planty), and the 400 free relay team (Cole, Planty, Slater, and Fitzsimmons) will advance to the finals. Also qualifying were: Dakota Cole in the 200 free and 500 free, Matt Doppel in the 100 free and the 100 backstroke, and Lucas Wickham in the 50 free and 100 breaststroke.
Consolation qualifiers include: Pat Bannon and Sean Holland (alternate) in the 200 free; Planty and Slater in the 50 free; Fitzsimmons and Bannon (alternate) in the 100 butterfly; Planty and Connor Smith in the 100 free; Holland in the 500 free; Fitzsimmons in the 100 backstroke; and Simon Wigmore in the 100 breaststroke.
For Odessa, the 200 medley relay team (James Terry, Tony Humphries, Billy Tague, and Andy Fudala), the 200 free relay team (Alec Betts, Terry, Caelan Haney, and Fudala), and 400 free relay team (Betts, Haney, Humphries, and Tague) all advance to the finals.
Individually, Tague advances in the 200 free and 500 free; Humphries in the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke; Betts in the 200 IM and 100 free; Haney 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke; Terry in the 100 free; and Fudala in the 100 breaststroke
In the consolation finals, Kyle Frasier will compete in the 200 IM, while Fudala advances in the 50 free and Noah Brewster in the 100 backstroke.

Watkins girls beat Unadilla Valley
WATKINS GLEN-The Watkins Glen girls varsity basketball team topped Unadilla Valley, 56-28, in the first round of sectionals, Wednesday, Feb. 17.
Amanda Pike led the Senecas with 16 points, including five steals, a trio of three-point shots, three assists, and three rebounds. Allison Teed, Mariah Gonzalez, and Emmie Bond each scored eight points. Mikenna Ayers added four points. Hanley Elliott, Clara Chedzoy, Hannah Morse, Maggie Bond, Ryanna LaMoreaux, and Taylor Kelly all recorded two points apiece.
With the win, Watkins Glen's record is now 14-6. The Senecas play next at home, Saturday, Feb. 20.

Dundee boys beat Cal-Mum in sectionals
DUNDEE-The Dundee boys varsity basketball team beat Caledonia-Mumford, 62-58, in the Section V Class C2 opener, Wednesday, Feb. 17.
Ryan Sprague scored 17 points, while Bobby Strait had 16. Devin Jensen added 11.
With the win, the Scots' record is 15-6 and advance to the sectional quarterfinals against Campbell-Savona, Friday, Feb. 19.

Penn Yan girls win sectional opener
PENN YAN-The Penn Yan girls varsity basketball team beat Waterloo in a close sectional match-up, Wednesday, Feb. 17. The final score was 40-39.
With the win, the Lady Mustangs advance to the Class B1 sectional quarterfinals against Livonia, the number one seed, Saturday, Feb. 20. Penn Yan is seeded eighth.
Sydney Bloom led with 12 points. Emily Wunder scored seven points with 12 rebounds. Emalee Rose Brockman recorded six points, while Hannah Keech added five. Annie White and Lizzy Lafferty both earned four points. Cassidy Prather scored two.

Odessa girls fall to Sidney, 40-30
ODESSA-The Odessa-Montour girls varsity basketball team suffered a loss to Sidney, 40-30, in the opening round of the Class C Sectionals, Wednesday, Feb. 17.
Leading the Indians was Olivia Grover with 13 points and 10 rebounds. Gillian Clark earned 10 points and 10 rebounds. Nakiaha Robinson recorded five points, while Maddie Lodge scored two.
"All in all, a 12-9 record playing three freshmen and being down two starters most of the year due to injuries was a pretty good result," said Coach Greg Gavich. "We will learn from this and get better and look to improve down the road."

Bradford/Dundee loses to Kendall
BRADFORD--The Bradford/Dundee girls varsity basketball team lost to Kendall, 56-30, in the opening round of sectionals, Wednesday, Feb. 17.
Individual scoring results were not provided.
The girls end with a 8-12 record.

Lakers fall to Lyndonville
LYNDONVILLE-The Hammondsport boys varsity basketball team lost to Lyndonville in the opening round of sectionals, Wednesday, Feb. 17. The final score was 78-53. Ethan Bower had 21 points, Cody Kolodziejczak added 13.

Hammondsport ends season
FILLMORE--The Hammondsport girls varsity basketball team lost to Fillmore, 41-21, in sectionals, Wednesday, Feb. 17. Emily Eckel had seven points and eight rebounds. Katelyn Hoyt added five. The Lakers end with a 3-17 record.
