SPORTS RECAP: Week of 1-15-20

Penn Yan boys lose to Wayne; girls win 33-24
PENN YAN--The Penn Yan boys varsity basketball team lost to Wayne, 52-41, Friday, Jan. 10.
Kyle Berna led with 14 points, including a trio of three-point shots. Devon Gerhardt scored nine points, all three-point shots. Brennan Prather added eight points. Peter Nicholson posted five.
The Mustangs defeated Mynderse Academy, Tuesday, Jan. 7. The final score was 74-64.
Prather led with 21 points, followed by Nicholson with 18. Mason Kuver scored 13 points. Berna posted 10 points. Dominic Lafferty added nine, while David DeSorbo contributed three.
Girls basketball
The Lady Mustangs varsity basketball team topped Wayne, 33-24, Friday, Jan. 10.
Sierra Harrison led with 10 points. Jammie Decker had seven points, 12 rebounds, and three blocks. Ashley Sisson also added seven points and 10 rebounds. Joddie Decker posted five points, 10 rebounds, and three assists. Jenna Curbeau had three points and five rebounds.
The Penn Yan girls lost to Mynderse, 40-31, Wednesday, Jan. 8.
Harrison scored 11 points, while Sisson added nine points and eight rebounds. Curbeau had five points and six rebounds. Joddie Decker posted four points, eight rebounds, and five assists. Jammie Decker earned two points and 13 rebounds.
Wrestling
The Marcus Whitman/Penn Yan varsity wrestling team competed in the 18th Anniversary Eastern States Wrestling Classic, Friday, Jan. 10 and Saturday, Jan. 11.
Justin Smith (152) was the only wrestler for the combined team to place. Smith was fifth in the final, beating his Central Valley opponent by decision, 7-0.
Bowling
The Penn Yan boys and girls varsity bowling teams both beat Geneva, 5-0, Thursday, Jan. 9.
Ben Broome led with a 610 for the boys. Jon Mashewske followed with a 609, while Cameron Bassage had a 606.
For the girls, Anella Tillman bowled a 562. Andy Kniffin contributed a 550. Brandee Ellis earned a 478. Mckelvie Jensen added a 449.
The Mustangs' girls topped Wayne, 5-0, Tuesday, Jan. 7.
Ellis led with a 473. Jensen and Tillman both bowled a 463. Kniffin followed with a 453. Amelia LeVea had a 404.
The boys lost 4-1. Bassage posted a 603. Connor Harmon contributed a 569. Mashewske had a 532, followed by Broome with a 488.
Both Penn Yan teams defeated Bloomfield, 5-0, Monday, Jan. 6.
Tillman bowled a 559 for the girls. Kniffin had a 549, while Ellis earned a 444. Jensen followed with a 413.
For the boys, Bassage contributed a 763 including a 277 second game. Harmon posted a 602.

Dundee wrestlers compete; bowling tops Naples
CANANDAIGUA--The Dundee wrestling team competed in the Bradshaw Tournament at Canandaigua, last Friday and Saturday.
Travis Bailey placed sixth and Kenneth Empson Jr. seventh.
The wrestling team faced Red Jacket-Bloomfield, Thursday, Jan. 9. The evening was senior night where Logan Corey was recognized before the match.
There were only four competitive bouts where Dundee wrestlers Harvey Tongate, Michael Eaves, Jacob Shimer and Hayden Erick saw losses.
Girls basketball
The Dundee girls varsity basketball team lost to Marcus Whitman, Wednesday, Jan. 8. The final score was 41-32.
Makenzie Cratsley led with 15 points, 10 rebounds, and six steals. Mackenzie Strait posted 10 points, seven rebounds, and six assists. Savannah Eaves followed with four points, while Alexandria Wood had three points. Hallie Knapp posted nine rebounds.
The Lady Scots topped Sodus, 40-14, Monday, Jan. 6.
Strait scored 17 points, with five rebounds. Trisha Edmister earned six points, followed by Cratsley with four points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals. Eaves contributed four points, four steals, and two rebounds. Wood and Abigail Miller both scored four points.
Indoor track
The Watkins Glen/Dundee varsity indoor track team competed in the One and Done meet at SUNY Cortland, Saturday, Jan. 11.
Each athlete could only compete in one event. Matt Wood was first in the 3200 meter in 10:28.8. Lily Hall placed second in the long jump with a school record breaking 16'7.75".
Boys basketball
The Scots' boys varsity basketball team topped Naples, Thursday, Jan. 9. The final score was 59-42. Steven Webster scored 20 points. Logan Salvatore had 14.
Dundee's boys basketball team lost to Avoca, 69-36, Monday, Jan. 6. No additional stats were available.
Bowling
The Scots' girls and boys varsity bowling teams both topped Naples, 5-0, Thursday, Jan. 9.
Cheyenne Cummings led the girls with a 441. Sam Hunt earned a 413. Jaedyn Brewer added a 411, followed by Cassie Morrissette with a 409.
Stephen Smith contributed a 464 for the boys. Justin Keech had a 419. Aaron Bruzda posted a 388, while Austin States added a 373. Bryan Merrill earned a 318.
Dundee's girls bowling team beat Bloomfield, 4-1, Tuesday, Jan. 7.
Hunt posted a 408. Morgan bowled a 400. Andrews had a 389, followed by Morrissette with a 378. Cummings contributed a 358.
The boys were beaten 4-1. Smith posted a 466 for the Scots. States earned a 426. Bruzda added a 370, while Keech had a 325. Skye Strickland contributed a 322.

Lakers fall to Andover, 52-33
ANDOVER--The Hammondsport girls varsity basketball team fell to Andover, 52-33, Tuesday, Jan. 7.
Destiny Hammond scored 17 points. Jillian Underhill posted seven points, followed by Hannah Hoerter with five. Rorie Whitcomb and Erika Hilligus both earned two points.
Boys basketball
The Hammondsport boys varsity basketball team fell to Bradford, 69-56, Friday, Jan. 10.
The Lakers came within six points in the third quarter of catching up to Bradford. CJ Hill netted 14 points. Chris Becker scored 13. Zak Davis posted 12 points.
Hammondsport lost to Romulus, Monday, Jan. 6. The final score was 46-36. Becker posted 12 points.

Wrestlers compete in tourney, win against Edison
The Odessa-Montour/Watkins Glen varsity wrestling team competed in the Bradshaw Invitational at Canandaigua, Friday, Jan. 10, and Saturday, Jan. 11.
Braiden Ventra (170) was the top finisher in sixth overall.
Also competing was Dominick Fazzary, Kaden LaBar, Zach Burrows, Paiton Bailey, Joshua Beckley and Tristian Harrington.
The wrestling team defeated Thomas Edison, Wednesday, Jan. 8, 60-18.
Joe Sweet (285) pinned Spencer Meriwether in 1:45. Morgan Burnham (106), Brandon Davis (113), Mark Waterman (132), Jaden Smith (138), Fazzary (145), LaBar (152), Burrows (160), Ventra (170) and Beckley (182) each won by forfeit.
Boys swimming
The Odessa-Montour boys varsity swim team defeated Watkins Glen, Thursday, Jan. 9. The final score was 58-34.
Micah Brewster won first in the 200 yard freestyle (2:18.54) and first in the 100 yard freestyle (1:02.18). Brett Walters took first in the 100 yard butterfly (1:07.39) and first in the 100 yard backstroke (1:11.40).
Brock Sgrecci placed first in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:16.82). Nick DeLong finished first in the 500 yard freestyle (6:39.68). Jacob Mayette was first in the 200 yard individual medley (2:34.15).
The Indians lost to Lansing, 51-43, Jan. 9.
Walters won first in the 100 yard freestyle (56.53) and second in the 200 yard freestyle (2:09.35). Sgrecci took first in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.45). DeLong finished second in the 100 yard backstroke (1:09.62).
Mayette was second in the 200 yard individual medley (2:29.49). Brewster placed second in the 500 yard freestyle (6:18.64). Justin Ruocco was second in the 50 yard freestyle (26.71).
Boys basketball
The Indians' boys varsity basketball team lost to Groton, Friday, Jan. 10. The final score was 60-47.
Preston Harris and Cayden Confer led the scoring with 11 and nine points respectively.
Odessa-Montour fell to Union Springs, 68-51, Tuesday, Jan. 7.
Paden Grover recorded 19 points for the Indians.
Girls basketball
The Odessa-Montour girls fell to Union Springs, Tuesday, Jan. 7. The final score was 46-23.
JoLynn Minnier led with 10 points and 16 rebounds. Sara Gardner scored six points, while Grace Vondracek had four points. The Indians' record is now 5-5.

Watkins swimming falls to Odessa; girls basketball win
The Watkins Glen boys varsity swim team lost to Odessa-Montour, 58-34, Thursday, Jan. 9.
Daine Butler finished first in the 50 yard freestyle (28.32) and second in the 100 yard freestyle (1:03.32). Scott Brubaker placed second in the 200 yard individual medley (2:46.77) and second in the 100 breaststroke (1:25.54). Jordan Avery was second in the 50 yard freestyle (28.68) and second in the 100 yard backstroke (1:17.26).
The Senecas fell to Waverly, Tuesday, Jan. 7.
Liam Smith won first in the 500 yard freestyle (6:26.52). Lane Roy was first in the 100 backstroke (1:22.37). Butler took first in the 100 breaststroke (1:19.49).
Ben Swinnerton finished second in the 500 yard freestyle (6:45.43). Brubaker took second in the 100 yard backstroke (1:23.98). Owen Bingham placed second in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:24.51).
Indoor track
The Watkins Glen/Dundee varsity indoor track team competed in the One and Done meet at SUNY Cortland, Saturday, Jan. 11.

Girls basketball
The Senecas' girls varsity basketball team beat Thomas A. Edison, 46-41, Thursday, Jan. 9.
Abigail Gibson scored eight points, with three steals, two rebounds, and two assists. Adrienna Solomon had seven points, seven rebounds, three assists, three steals, and two blocks. Aislinn Klemann also posted seven points, four rebounds, and two steals.
Jenna Solomon contributed six points, while Kelsey Kernan added four points, six rebounds, and two steals. Natalie Edmister also scored four points, with two rebounds.
Boys basketball
The Watkins Glen boys varsity basketball team fell to Whitney Point, Tuesday, Jan. 7. The final score was 54-50.
Owen Scholtisek recorded 14 points and Max Evans had 12.
Wrestling
The Odessa-Montour/Watkins Glen varsity wrestling team competed in the Bradshaw Invitational at Canandaigua, Friday, Jan. 10, and Saturday, Jan. 11.

Alyiah Clink-Bentley led with a 431. Ava Cowan contributed a 377. Makenzie Kellogg added a 362. Brooke Usher posted a 345.
The boys lost, 4-0. Caleb Smith bowled a 516, followed by Matt Irwin with a 515. Robert Bannon contributed a 499. Mykal Cody posted a 460.
Both the Watkins girls and boys teams lost to Elmira Notre Dame, 3-1, Tuesday, Jan. 7.
Smith led the boys with a 550. Bannon posted a 531, while Irwin had a 489.
For the girls, Kellogg had a 446. Clink-Bentley contributed a 371. Cowan earned a 346.
Cheerleading
The Watkins Glen varsity cheerleading squad competed at the Penn Yan Winter Cheer Explosion on Saturday, Jan. 11. The team placed third in the Co-Ed division. Horseheads was first in Co-Ed and Silver Creek second. Watkins will now travel to Union-Endicott for the Winter Chill Vibes Competition, Saturday, Jan. 25.
