SPORTS RECAP: Week of 1-2-19

Watkins boys fall to Whitney Point
Editor's Note: The New Year holiday made deadlines for this recap Thursday, Dec. 27.
WATKINS GLEN--The Watkins Glen boys varsity basketball team lost to Whitney Point, 59-47, Friday, Dec. 21.
Joe Chedzoy scored 19 points. Isaac McIlroy posted 12 points, while Adam Pastore had six. Mitchell Pike added five. Collin Baker netted four and Owen Scholtisek had one point.
Girls basketball
The Watkins Glen girls varsity basketball team topped Union Endicott, 63-39, in the first round of the Senecas' own Melissa B. Wilson tournament, Wednesday, Dec. 26.
Taylor Kelly recorded 22 points, with four rebounds and three steals. Kelsey Kernan added 11 points. Hannah Morse and Adrienna Solomon both scored 10 points. Morse also posted six rebounds, three steals, and 15 assists. Danielle Leszyk earned seven points, including two three-point shots and four rebounds.
Watkins topped Whitney Point, 55-51, Friday, Dec. 21.
Morse posted 16 points, with seven steals and five assists. Leszyk had 13 points, five rebounds, and three steals. Kelly added 11 points, six rebounds, and two steals. Solomon earned eight points and seven rebounds.
Watkins defeated Elmira Notre Dame, Wednesday, Dec. 19. The final score was 52-29.
Kelly scored 14 points, including a pair of three-point shots, six rebounds, and three steals. Morse followed with 13 points, three rebounds, five steals, and three assists. Kernan added eight points and six rebounds.
Indoor track
The Watkins Glen varsity indoor track teams competed at the Section IV Classic Invite, Friday, Dec. 21, held at SUNY Cortland.
For the boys, Gabe Planty won the 1000 meter (2:43.57). Sam Thorsland placed sixth in the 3200 meters (11:23.38). Lance Majors took 11th in the 600 meter (1:41.72) and 14th in the 300 meter (45.53, a personal record).
For the girls, Kaylana Rekczis was second in the 1500 race walk (9:44.91). Breanna Carl was fourth in the 1500 meters (5:43.76). Kai Sutterby took fifth in the 1000 meters (3:33.25). Allison Gibson placed sixth in the long jump (14'7.75") and 12th in the 55 meters (8.25). Haley Dean finished eighth in the 300 meter (48.03). Victoria Bantin was eighth in the 55 meter hurdles (11.14).
Boys swimming
The Watkins Glen boys varsity swim team fell to Southern Cayuga, 65-28, Monday, Dec. 17.
Daine Butler won the 50 free (27.65) and was second in the 100 freestyle (1:05.72). Nathaniel Wickham took first in the 100 butterfly (1:23.11). Scott Brubaker was second in the 200 freestyle (2:30.97) and third in the 100 breaststroke (1:29.03).
Bowling
The Watkins Glen varsity bowling teams both blanked Newark Valley, 4-0, in a home match, Friday, Dec. 21.
RJ Bannon led the boys with a 536. H. Nathaniel Rose posted a 527. Wyatt Brower bowled a 526, followed by Wrett Brower with a 523.
For the girls, Nikole Vandyke bowled a 547. Makenzie Kellogg had a 433, while Hayley Cornish posted a 431.
The Watkins boys tied Union Springs/Port Byron, 2-2, Wednesday, Dec. 19.
Rose posted a 665. Wrett Brower added a 576. Wyatt Brower bowled a 559.
The girls fell, 4-0. Vandyke had a 508 series. Nancy Jackson added a 428.

O-M loses to Union Springs
ODESSA--Odessa-Montour's boys varsity basketball team fell to Union Springs, Friday, Dec. 21. The final score was 51-46.
"We started the game out playing well defensively," said Coach Matt Johnston. "The second quarter we had some turnovers that led to easy buckets for Union Springs. We have had a tendency to get ourselves behind and have to fight hard to get back in the game."
Zach Elliott led with 15 points, 13 rebounds, and seven assists. Paden Grover scored 12 points and had 11 rebounds, while Devon Mahaney added seven points. Derrick Lewis earned five points. Preston Harris scored four, followed by Deshawn Johnson with two.
The Indians were beaten by Newfield, 55-37, Tuesday, Dec. 18.
Elliott earned 15 points. Mahaney scored eight. Johnson added four points. Jared Rumsey and Ryan Griswold both posted two points.
Girls basketball
The Indians' girls varsity basketball team fell to Newfield, Tuesday, Dec. 18. The final score was 51-39.
Olivia Grover scored 11 points. Kennedey Heichel added 10 points, while Sara Gardner posted nine. Grace Vondracek earned seven points. Jolynn Minnier had two.
Coach Greg Gavich said, "We got outrebounded by 15, turned it over 27 times, and scored four points in the fourth quarter."
Boys swimming
The Indians' boys varsity swim team suffered a loss to Waverly, 107-62, Tuesday, Dec. 18
Jacob Mayette won first in the 100 butterfly (1:04.56). Bailey Hornbrook took second in the 200 IM (2:37.32) and third in the 100 freestyle (59.00). Brett Walters finished second in the 100 freestyle (57.69) and third in the 200 freestyle (2:10.87, a personal record).
Tyler Carson placed second in the 100 backstroke (1:15.72), while Caleb Thomas was second in the 100 breaststroke (1:23.00). Mayette also took third in the 50 freestyle (25.36). Micah Brewster was third in the 500 freestyle (6:45.83). With the loss, Odessa's record is now 4-1.
Bowling
Odessa-Montour's varsity boys and girls bowling teams topped Marathon, 4-0, Thursday, Dec. 20.
Eric Rumsey bowled a 480. Dom Elliott followed with a 410 series. Austin Hoyt posted a 311. Wes Wade added a 298.
For the girls, Jackie Vincent led with a 558. Pixie Kinner earned a 434. Jana Arias bowled a 393.

Penn Yan girls lose to Geneva; boys top Wayland
PENN YAN--The Penn Yan Lady Mustangs' varsity basketball team lost to Geneva, Friday, Dec. 21. The final score was 51-44.
Peyton Comfort led with 16 points, eight rebounds, and four steals. Jammie Decker posted nine points and three rebounds. Ashley Sisson scored six points, followed by Sierra Harrison with five points and four rebounds. Jenna Curbeau had four points, eight rebounds, and three assists, while Joddie Decker earned four points, five assists, and four rebounds.
The Penn Yan girls topped Pittsford Sutherland, 50-43, Monday, Dec. 17.
Leading the Mustangs was Comfort with 15 points, 15 rebounds, and five assists. Harrison netted 11 points. Curbeau contributed seven points and 10 rebounds. Jammie Decker scored six points, with six rebounds, while Haylea Langan also had six points. Joddie Decker earned three points, four assists, four rebounds, and three steals. Sisson had two points.
Boys basketball
The Penn Yan boys varsity basketball team defeated Wayland-Cohocton, 64-48, Thursday, Dec. 27.
Conner Fingar scored 20 points. Peter Nicholson posted 13 points, while Kyle Berna had 11. Peyton Shuck netted 10 points, including a pair of three-point shots. Colton Smith and Brennan Prather both scored three points.
The Mustangs' boys varsity basketball team fell to Geneva, 48-43, Friday, Dec. 21.
Fingar and Nicholson both scored 13 points. Shuck added six. Smith posted five points, while Prather, Devon Gerhardt, and Berna each scored two points.
Wrestling
The Marcus Whitman/Penn Yan combined wrestling team lost to Palmyra-Macedon, 45-24, Thursday, Dec. 20.
Jarred Calice (145) won over Gage Burgess by major decision, 13-0. Brenden Howley (170) pinned Logan Coon in 0:55. Tyler Howe (182) beat Jon Battoglia by decision, 6-3. Colton Yerkes (195) pinned Zachory Trautman in 1:09. Mason Peterrson (220) won over Riley Belanger in 1:12.
The wrestling team notched a win against Waterloo, Tuesday, Dec. 18. The final score was 36-33.
Aiden Mowry (113) won with a pin over Jayson Minguez in 1:23. Jayden Reed (126) topped Derek Colegrove by decision, 8-3. Justin Smith (132) pinned Thomas Laughlan in 0:56. Charlie Burgess (138) beat Zachary Coleman in 3:09. Calice (145) won over Kaleb Seeley in 2:32. Dylan Howell (152) pinned Nathan Costantino in 1:32. Aden Hurlburt (170) beat Isaiah Cottman by decision, 11-4.
Bowling
The Mustangs' boys and girls varsity bowling teams both defeated Geneva at an away event, Wednesday, Dec. 19. The final scores were 5-0.
Cameron Bassage bowled a 562 for the boys. Zach Gurba added a 548, followed by Connor Harmon with a 535.
Kari Ayers led the girls with a 584. Emily Augustine posted a 488. Emilie Thomas had a 453 series, while Brandee Ellis bowled a 401.
Both Penn Yan bowling teams beat Wayne, 4-1, Tuesday, Dec. 18.
Augustine posted a 529 for the girls, followed by Ayers with a 522. Thomas added a 475. Ellis had a 474. Aysa Crocker earned a 439.
For the boys, Bassage secured a 672 series. Gurba posted a 581, while Harmon bowled a 580. Jon Mashewske followed with a 568. Ben Broome added a 493.

Dundee wrestling competes against Red Creek
DUNDEE--The Dundee varsity wrestling team lost to Red Creek, Thursday, Dec. 20. The final score was 52-24.
Julian Heavner-Ortiz, Tate Hoyt and Harry Nice all had pins. Michael Eaves received a forfeit.
Girls basketball
The Lady Scots varsity basketball team lost to South Seneca, 67-28, Thursday, Dec. 20.
Megan Sutherland led with 12 points and four rebounds. Mackenzie Strait scored six points, with seven assists. Delaine Nolan posted four points, with two assists. Makenzie Cratsley, Savannah Eaves, and Hallie Knapp each scored two points. Cratsley also earned seven rebounds, while Knapp had six.
Dundee defeated Harley Allendale Columbia, 46-40, Tuesday, Dec. 18.
Sutherland posted 18 points, with five rebounds. Cratsley added 17 points and 18 rebounds. Knapp followed with six points and eight rebounds. Strait scored four points, with four rebounds, four assists, and four blocks.
Boys basketball
The Dundee boys varsity basketball team fell to South Seneca, Friday, Dec. 21. The final score was 79-62. Austin Gibson scored 17 points, while Preston Cratsley had 16.
The Scots were beaten by Harley Allendale Columbia, 54-40, Tuesday, Dec. 18.
Indoor track
Dundee's Matt Wood and Lily Hall competed in the Section IV Classic Invite at SUNY Cortland, Friday, Dec. 21, with the Watkins Glen indoor track team.
Matt Wood won the 1600 meter (4:48.20, a personal record) and took second in the 1000 meter (2:50.15, a personal record). Lily Hall took second in the triple jump (32'11.75"), third in the long jump (15'5.5"), and 11th in the 55 meters (8.21).
Bowling
Both of Dundee's varsity bowling teams topped Harley Allendale Columbia, Thursday, Dec. 20. The final scores were 5-0.
Hunter Murphy recorded a 507 series. Stephen Smith had a 477, while Connor Muck added a 470. Matthew Pollack earned a 454, while Ridge Wright posted 364.
Jaedyn Brewer bowled a 462 for the girls. Mercedez Roy posted a 442. Edele Morgan followed with a 358.

Lakers fall to Addison, 56-33
ADDISON--The Hammondsport boys varsity basketball team lost to Addison, 56-33, Friday, Dec. 21.
CJ Hill led with 12 points. Parker Watson scored seven points, followed by Bryon Stevens with five points. Michael Beam added three points. Ian MacDonald, Johnathon Wells, and Travis Beers each contributed two points.
Hammondsport was beaten by Prattsburgh, Tuesday, Dec. 18. The final score was 60-36.
Girls basketball
The Hammondsport girls varsity basketball team fell to Addison, 59-28, Friday, Dec. 21.
Ana Salom posted eight points and eight rebounds. Jillian Underhill scored six points, with four rebounds and three steals. McKenzie Boscoe added four points and seven rebounds, while Amanda O'Donnell also earned four points. Tea' Flynn, Paula Garcia, and Maddie Sprague each scored two points. Flynn and Garcia each posted five and four rebounds respectively. Destiny Hammond had four steals and three rebounds.
The Lakers topped Prattsburgh/Avoca in a close 45-43 game, Wednesday, Dec. 19.
Hammond led with 15 points and three rebounds. Salom posted 14 points, seven rebounds, four blocks, and four steals. Flynn added seven points and eight rebounds. Boscoe earned five points and five rebounds. Underhill contributed four points, 10 rebounds, four assists, and four steals.
