SPORTS RECAP: Week of 1-29-20

Penn Yan girls basketball top Rush-Henrietta
PENN YAN--The Penn Yan girls varsity basketball team beat Rush-Henrietta in a home game, Monday, Jan. 27. The final score was 52-28.
Sierra Harrison led with 19 points. Ashley Sisson followed with 13 points and eight rebounds. Joddie Decker scored eight points and had six assists. Jammie Decker led the team with 10 rebounds and scored six points.
The girls basketball team lost a close game to Midlakes, Friday, Jan. 24. The final score was 54-52.
Sisson, Jenna Curbeau and Sierra Harrison were the top scorers with 14, 13 and 12 points respectively.
Boys basketball
The Mustangs' boys varsity basketball team topped Haverling 43-41, Saturday, Jan. 25.
Mason Kuver led with 18 points, going two-for-two at the free throw line. Devon Gerhardt, Brennan Prather, and Kyle Berna each scored six points. Prather was four-for-eight at the free throw line.
Penn Yan defeated Midlakes, Friday, Jan. 24. The final score was 60-54.
Gerhardt scored 15 points, all three-point shots. Kuver posted 13 points, while Prather added 10. Berna had eight points, going four-for-four at the free throw line. David DeSorbo recorded five points.
Bowling
The Penn Yan girls and boys varsity bowling teams both beat Waterloo, 5-0, Thursday, Jan. 23.
Andy Kniffin led the girls with a 600. Anella Tillman followed closely with a 596. Brandee Ellis posted a 487. McKelvie Jensen added a 462. Amelia LeVea had a 409.
For the boys, Cameron Bassage posted a 645. Connor Harmon added a 614, while Ben Broome bowled a 601. Jon Mashewske earned a 549.
The Mustangs beat Romulus, 5-0, Tuesday, Jan. 21.
Bassage posted a 611 and Harmon earned a 598.
For the girls, Kniffin led with a 591. Tillman posted a 522, followed by Ellis with a 429.
Wrestling
The Marcus Whitman/Penn Yan varsity wrestling team placed fifth at the Wayne-Finger Lakes League Championship, Friday, Jan. 24, to Saturday, Jan. 25.
Ayden Mowry (120) and Justin Smith (160) took first with wins in the championship round. Colton Yerkes (195) and Mason Petersen (220) placed second. Damien Snyder (138) finished third, while Chad Smith (152) was fourth.

Dundee girls lose to South Seneca, boys win 44-39
DUNDEE--The Lady Scots varsity basketball team lost to South Seneca, 34-18, Friday, Jan. 24.
Makenzie Cratsley led Dundee with six points, 14 rebounds and three steals. Mackenzie Strait added five points and Trisha Edmister had three.
Boys basketball
Dundee's boys varsity basketball team beat South Seneca in an away game, Thursday, Jan. 23. The final score was 44-39.
Logan Salvatore scored 21 points for the Scots and Steven Webster 15.
Bowling
The Dundee girls varsity bowling team defeated Harley Allendale Columbia, 5-0, Thursday, Jan. 23.
Kayla Andrews led with a 411. Jaedyn Brewer bowled a 405, followed by Cassie Morrissette with a 401. Sam Hunt posted a 376.
The boys lost 4-1. Stephen Smith posted a 516. Austin States added a 480. Aaron Ayers contributed a 353, while Justin Keech had a 338.
The Scots' bowling teams both lost to Marcus Whitman, 5-0, Tuesday, Jan. 21.
For the boys, Smith led with a 576. States had a 419, while Ayers added a 400.
On the girls' team, Morrissette posted a 465. Brewer had a 396. Claudia Lyons contributed a 345.
Indoor track
The Watkins Glen/Dundee varsity track team competed at the Trent Jackson Invite in Rochester.
Dundee's Lily Hall took seventh in the triple jump (34'9.75"). Matt Wood, who still competed despite being under the weather, ran the two mile in 10:30.11.

Lakers win at the buzzer
HAMMONDSPORT--The Hammondsport boys varsity basketball team topped Romulus, 51-49, Friday, Jan. 24.
The final basket was scored by Zak Davis with one second to go. Davis scored 15 points overall. C.J. Hill posted 14 points, while Chris Becker had 11. Ian MacDonald contributed nine points. Michael Beam scored two.
The Lakers fell to Jasper-Troupsburg, 47-46, Wednesday, Jan. 22.
Hammondsport trailed by one point at the half and tied it up in the third quarter. The Lakers then led the Wildcats for most of the fourth quarter, but came up short. The high scorer for the Lakers was Hill with nine points.
Girls basketball
The Lakers' girls varsity basketball team lost to Andover, 37-22, Thursday, Jan. 23.
Destiny Hammond scored eight points. Rorie Whitcomb added six points, followed by Hannah Hoerter with four points. Erika Hilligus and Jillian Underhill both earned two points.
Hammondsport defeated Jasper-Troupsburg, 48-36, Tuesday, Jan. 21.
Hoerter led with 15 points, while Whitcomb recorded 13. Hammond added 12 points. Maddie Sprague scored four points, followed by Lydia Dluzak and Underhill with two points each.

Watkins boys fall to Waverly; indoor track sets mark
WATKINS GLEN--The Watkins Glen boys varsity basketball team lost to Waverly in a home game, Saturday, Jan. 25. The final score was 53-48.
Owen Scholtisek recorded 17 points, Mitchell Pike had 11 and Adam Pastore 10 for the Senecas.
Wrestling
The Odessa-Montour/Watkins Glen varsity wrestling team competed at the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Duals Tournament, finishing 3-2, Saturday, Jan. 25.
Tristian Harrington (220) was undefeated for OM/WG. He won four matches with pins and the fifth by a 5-3 decision.
Joshua Beckley (182) and Kaden LaBar (152) both had a 4-1 record. Brandon Davis (113), Josiah Lynch (138), Dominick Fazzary (145), Zach Burrows (160) and Braiden Ventra (170) all finished 3-2.
The combined wrestling team lost to Marathon, 46-26, Wednesday, Jan. 22. Brandon Davis (120) beat Zander Sutton by decision, 11-5. Gabe Williams (126) pinned Maddox Hoy in 3:47. Josiah Lynch (138) defeated Cayne Durranceau in 1:25. Dominick Fazzary (145) topped Tim Morehouse in 3:01. Morgan Burnham (106) won by forfeit.
Indoor track
Watkins Glen's Gabe Planty placed 11th overall in the one mile run, Saturday, Jan. 25, at Staten Island's Ocean Breeze Complex. The time (4:23.91) broke the school one mile record and placed him third in his heat.
The rest of the Watkins Glen/Dundee varsity track team competed at the Trent Jackson Invite in Rochester.
Lily Hall took seventh in the triple jump (34'9.75"). Colin Gaylord took eighth in the 1500 meter race walk (11:28.51, a new school record).
Also competing were: Nick Wilston in the long jump (19'4"), Boyd Barber in the shot put (33'10.5") and in the weight throw (28'9"), Breanna Carl in the race walk (10:20.53), and Matt Wood in the two mile (10:30.11).
The Watkins team also competed at the Hurley Indoor Track Invite, Friday, Jan. 24.
Madelyn Suddaby was second in the triple jump (30'9.5", a school record) and sixth in the long jump (14'3.25").
Sam Thorsland placed third in the 1600 meter (5:02.38). Wilston finished fourth in the long jump (19'4") and fifth in the 55 meter dash (7.05, a personal record).
Cheerleading
The Watkins Glen varsity cheerleading team finished fourth in the Winter Chill Vibes Competition at Union-Endicott, Saturday, Jan. 25.
One athlete from each squad in the coed division was selected as a "Pin It Positive" Athlete. Watkins' Andrea Heskell was recognized for her positive attitude and exemplary sportsmanship.
Bowling
The Watkins Glen boys varsity bowling team topped Elmira Notre Dame, 3-1, Thursday, Jan. 23.
R.J. Bannon led with a 574. Mykal Cody posted a 485, while Matt Irwin had a 476. Caleb Smith contributed 458.
The girls lost, 3-1. Makenzie Kellogg earned a 446. Alyiah Clink-Bentley followed with 394. Ava Cowan posted a 341. Maisie Robertson bowled a 311.

Moravia tops Odessa; Harrington goes 5-0
ODESSA--The Odessa-Montour boys varsity basketball team was beaten by Moravia, Friday, Jan. 24. The final score was 79-52.
Paden Grover had 18 points for the Indians and Preston Harris recorded seven.
Wrestling
The Odessa-Montour/Watkins Glen varsity wrestling team competed at the Vernon-Verona-Sherrill Duals Tournament, finishing 3-2, Saturday, Jan. 25.

The Odessa-Montour boys varsity swim team competed at the John Beecher Invitational, Saturday, Jan. 25.
The 200 medley relay team of Caleb Reynolds, Brock Sgrecci, Jon Spencer, and Caleb Thomas took 13th (2:06.51). The 200 free relay team of Jake Mayette, Justin Roucco, Micah Brewster, and Brett Walters took 10th (1:41.44) and the same relay team of Mayette, Roucco, Brewster, and Waters took ninth in the 400 free relay (3:51.42). Individually Walters took 12th overall in the 100 backstroke, with a season best of 1:03.31.
The Indians' boys varsity swim team lost to Waverly, 130-40, Friday, Jan. 24.
The 200 medley relay team of Roucco, Thomas, Walters, and Spencer took second (1:59.86). Walters was second in the 100 freestyle (56.91). Sgrecci placed second in the 100 breaststroke (1:15.06).
"Despite the outcome of the meet, the O-M boys swam very well and posted a number of best times," said Coach Terri Brace.
