SPORTS RECAP: Week of 10-9-19

Hammondsport teams see homecoming wins
HAMMONDSPORT--The Hammondsport varsity volleyball team topped Campbell-Savona in three sets, Friday, Oct. 4. The final scores were 25-11, 25-16, 25-9.
Angela Gonzo and Erika Hilligus led at the service line with six and four aces respectively. Vittoria Cateni posted seven kills, while Julia Bennett had six.
The Lakers defeated Lyons, 25-16, 25-20, 25-10, Monday, Sept. 30.
Gonzo put in five aces at the service line. Bennett earned 13 kills at the net, followed by Cateni with seven. Brianna Pratt posted 28 setter assists.
Girls soccer
The Hammondsport/Bradford girls soccer team blanked Friendship, 4-0, Friday, Oct. 4.
Hannah Hoerter, Alivia Phenes, Ciera Celelli, and Sam Welch each scored once. Hoerter also assisted once. In goal, Rorie Whitcomb earned four saves.
The combined soccer team topped Jasper-Troupsburg, 2-1, Wednesday, Oct. 2.
Nikki Peterson and Phenes each scored once. Goalie Kirsta Sleeve had three saves.
Hammondsport/Bradford lost to Alfred-Almond, Monday, Sept. 30. The final score was 6-1.
Boys soccer
The Hammondsport boys varsity soccer team defeated Arkport/Canaseraga, 2-1, Thursday, Oct. 3.
Both goals were scored by John Wells, with assists from Nevin Davis. Hammondsport had 10 shots on goal in total, with eight saves for themselves.
The Lakers lost to Avoca, 3-0, Tuesday, Oct. 1. Hammondsport had 19 saves, with five shots on Avoca's goal, and five corner kicks.

Dundee volleyball tops Addison
DUNDEE--The Dundee varsity volleyball defeated Addison in four sets, Wednesday, Oct. 2. The final scores were 23-25, 25-11, 25-20, 25-18.
Makenzie Cratsley had 12 digs, three attacks, and 10 aces. Abigail Miller posted eight digs, one attack, one assist, one block, and three aces.
Hayley Herrick contributed four digs, two attacks, one assist, and one block. Renae Gregory earned two digs, four attacks, three assists, one block, and one ace.
The Scots were beaten by Penn Yan, 25-10, 25-13, 25-12, Monday, Sept. 30.
Cratsley posted seven digs and four attacks. Miller had four digs and one assist. Gregory earned one dig, three assists, and one block.
Girls soccer
The Dundee girls varsity soccer team tied Honeoye in an away game, Monday, Sept. 30. The final score was 0-0. In goal, Claudya Lyons had 12 saves.
Boys soccer
The Watkins Glen/Dundee boys varsity soccer team fell to Spencer-Van Etten/Candor, Thursday, Oct. 3. The final score was 9-0.
In goal, Bryce Kelly had seven saves until he was removed from play due to an injury. Josiah Wysocki finished the game as the goalie with four saves.
The combined soccer team beat Notre Dame, 7-2, Tuesday, Oct. 1.
Kelly earned five saves in goal.
Isaac McIlroy scored four times, including one on a penalty kick. Seamus Mooney added two goals, while Jacob Yontz scored on a penalty kick as well.
Cross country
The Scots' boys varsity cross country team competed at Clyde-Savannah-Lyons, Tuesday, Oct. 1.
Matt Wood was second (18:09) for the boys. Gabe Dillon was 20th (22:12). Logan Buchanan placed 33rd (24:54), followed by Cam Buchanan in 35th (25:25).

Penn Yan cross country hosts meet; football wins
The Mustangs girls varsity cross country team was seventh and the boys 13th, at the LeRoy Invitational, Saturday, Oct. 5.
Joddie Decker led with second place (19:20.93) for the girls. Grace Murphy placed 32nd (21:53.03). Jaina Doyle took 35th (21:57.72), while Jenna Curbeau was 62nd (23:51.99).
For the boys, James Tette was 27th (17:47.65). Ayden Mowry took 43rd (18:22.36). Teagan Fingar was 128th (20:42.58).
Penn Yan hosted Marcus Whitman, Midlakes, and North Rose-Wolcott, Tuesday, Oct. 1.
Decker led the girls with first overall (21:31). Murphy was second (23:54). Doyle took fourth (25:03). Curbeau was seventh (26:34). Abby Bodine placed 16th (31:44).
For the boys, Mowry placed fourth (19:04), followed by Tette in fifth (19:36). David Young took seventh (20:24). Fingar was 16th (22:40). Dominic Lafferty finished 18th (22:42). Zac Smith placed 25th (23:39).
Football
The Mustangs' varsity football team pulled out a close win against Waterloo, 33-30, Friday, Oct. 4.
Kyle Berna passed for 231 yards, earning three touchdowns. He was 22-for-30. Alex Foster added three yards, also with a touchdown.
On the receiving side, Brennan Prather caught the ball four times for 62 yards and two touchdowns. Mekhi Mahan had nine receptions for 46 yards and two touchdowns. Kyler Lloyd also had nine receptions, earning 100 yards. Damien Snyder caught the ball once for 23 yards.
Berna rushed for another 99 yards, and a touchdown. Mahan posted 10 rushes for 53 yards as well.
Defensively, Mahan led with 13 tackles. Prather had 11 tackles. Julien Miller posted 10 tackles and two interceptions, while Hunter Van Housen had 10 tackles and Lloyd contributed eight.
Girls soccer
The Lady Mustangs' varsity soccer team was beaten by Palmyra-Macedon, 6-2, Saturday, Oct. 5.
Leah Moniot and Hayley Andersen both scored. Goalie Elle Harrison had 14 saves.
Penn Yan topped Waterloo, 5-2, Wednesday, Oct. 2.
Andersen scored three of the goals: twice in the first half and at the start of the second half. Harrison and Alexxis Henry each scored once.
Harrison also assisted twice, while individual assists came from Moniot, Mariah Hoover, and Andersen. In goal, Harrison posted 13 saves.
The Penn Yan girls defeated Bloomfield, Monday, Sept. 30. The final score was 6-1.
Andersen scored three times and had three assists. Morgan Andersen scored twice, while Kaley Griffin had one goal. Griffin and Keuka Miranda-Wiltberger each also assisted once.
Tennis
The Penn Yan varsity tennis team beat Mynderse, 5-0, finishing a match, Friday, Oct. 4, that started on the Tuesday prior. Play for the senior recognition match was postponed due to rain.
Scores for the individual matches were: Molly Pullen, 6-1, 6-2; Claire Pullen, 6-1, 6-0; and Abigail Garvey, 6-1, 6-2. In doubles, the scores were: Sam Denson and Grace Worth, 6-2, 6-0; and Maryn Parson and Sarah Loucks, 5-7, 7-5, 10-5.
With the win, Penn Yan ends the regular season with a 11-1 record overall.
Boys soccer
The Mustangs' boys varsity soccer team lost to Naples, 1-0, Saturday, Oct. 5. Penn Yan had five shots on goal, one corner kick, and three saves.
Penn Yan was beaten by Newark, Thursday, Oct. 3. The final score was 2-1. Nicholas Jarecke scored once. The team attempted nine shots on Newark's goal.
Golf
The Mustangs' varsity golf team beat Wayne in a close 236-237 match, Thursday, Oct. 3. With the win, Penn Yan secured second place in the Finger Lakes East division.
Max Brodmann scored a 43. Clayton Koivuniemi posted a 45. Peter Nicholson had a 46, with a birdie on hole three. Kevin Smith added a 49, followed by Clark Simmons with a 53.
The Penn Yan team defeated Harley Allendale Columbia, 223-276, Tuesday, Oct. 1. Brodmann led with a 40. Smith earned a 43, with a birdie on the 12th hole. Koivuniemi golfed a 44, while Nicholson posted a 46.
Penn Yan topped Naples, 232-294, Monday, Sept. 30.
Brodmann led with a 40. Smith had a 43, with a birdie on hole 13. Simmons and Koivuniemi each posted a 49. Cameron Bassage golfed a 51.
Volleyball
Penn Yan's varsity volleyball team beat Geneva in five sets, Thursday, Oct. 3. The final scores were 15-25, 25-14, 23-25, 25-15, 25-20.
Caitlin Wunder had 28 kills, two assists, and 10 digs. Serina Sheradin earned five aces, two kills, 32 assists, and six digs. Jammie Decker contributed seven aces, three kills, two blocks, and six digs.
Lauren Chinski posted three aces, four kills, and 10 digs. Kayla Andersen added three kills, one assist, one block, and five digs.
The Mustangs lost to Palmyra-Macedon, Tuesday, Oct. 1. The final scores were 25-20, 22-25, 25-23, 19-24, 25-18.
Wunder posted 35 kills, four block assists, and nine digs. Sheradin added 42 assists, six digs, and one ace.
Hanna Brodmann contributed five kills and 15 digs. Andersen had one ace, two solo blocks, and four block assists.

Odessa-Montour boys soccer falls to Notre Dame
ODESSA--Odessa-Montour's boys varsity soccer team fell to Notre Dame, Thursday, Oct. 4. The final score was 2-1.
Girls soccer
The Odessa-Montour girls varsity soccer team was beaten by Notre Dame, 1-0, Monday, Sept. 30.
Seneca Indians Football
The Seneca Indians, a Class C team, faced off against the Class AA Ithaca team, Friday, Oct. 4, ultimately falling, 20-14.
"Two big touchdown pass plays of 51 yards and 64 yards from Ithaca proved to be the game changer for them," said Coach Trevor Holland. "The Seneca-Indians had their chance late in the game with a great fourth quarter, 15 play drive taking the ball down to the Ithaca 10 yard line."
Derrick Lewis was 5-for-15 passing for 46 yards, with two touchdowns and one interception.
Owen Scholtisek led the rushing with 11 carries for 46 yards. Ben Mathews had eight carries for 33 yards. Dominick Fazzary rushed 34 yards over 11 carries.
Matt Irwin posted 22 yards and Hunter Holley had eight.
Volleyball
The Odessa-Montour varsity volleyball team fell to Waverly, 25-17, 25-19, 25-11, Thursday, Oct. 3.
Rhys Stermer posted 10 service points, six, aces, four kills, and five blocks. Cheianne Webster had five service points and four digs. Hannah Chapman posted three service points, one ace, three kills, and one dig. Sam Sipes contributed three service points, two aces, one assist, and one dig.
Girls swimming
The Odessa-Montour girls varsity swim team lost to Southern Cayuga, 52-40, Thursday, Oct. 3.
Madison Moss placed first in the 200 yard individual medley (2:35.48) and first in the 500 yard freestyle (6:21.22). Megan Adams took first in the 100 yard backstroke (1:20.31). Delaney Paulisczak won first in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:33.07).
Katie Adams placed second in the 100 yard butterfly (1:21.63). Emilee Chaffinch was second in the 100 yard backstroke (1:28.71). Taryn Hoyt finished second in the 100 yard breaststroke (2:07.41).
The Indians fell to Dryden, Tuesday, Oct. 1. The final score was 54-40.
Moss won first in the 200 yard individual medley (2:35.66) and first in the 500 yard freestyle (6:29.94). Adams took first in the 100 yard butterfly (1:19.60).

Watkins swim team records wins; soccer splits pair
WATKINS GLEN--The Watkins Glen girls swim team defeated Elmira Notre Dame and Corning, Saturday, Oct. 5.
Recording wins for Watkins Glen against Corning was the 200 medley relay team, Thalia Marquez in the 200 freestyle and 500 Freestyle; Amanda Wilbur, 200 individual medley, 100 butterfly; Peighton Cervoni, 50 freestyle, 100 backstroke; Maria Brubaker, diving; Faye Mooney, 100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke; and the 200 freestyle relay team.
Against Notre Dame, winning for Watkins was the 200 medley relay team; Marquez, 200 freestyle, 500 freestyle; Wilbur, 200 IM, 100 butterfly; Cervoni, 50 freestyle, 100 backstroke; Brubaker, diving; Mooney, 100 freestyle, 100 breaststroke; 200 freestyle relay team; and 400 freestyle relay team.
The girls swim team defeated Lansing, 102-76, Thursday, Oct. 3.
Cervoni took first in the 50 yard freestyle (26.81) and first in the 100 yard backstroke (1:07.07). Marquez placed first in the 200 yard freestyle (2:10.12) and first in the 500 yard freestyle (5:45.81). Wilbur finished first in the 100 yard butterfly (1:08.19) and second in the 200 yard individual medley (2:29.45).
Brubaker was first in diving, followed by Alexandria LaMoreaux in second. Alannah Klemann took second in the 100 yard freestyle (1:03.83). Mooney was second in the 200 yard freestyle (2:16.56). Malina Butler finished second in the 100 yard backstroke (1:16.40).

The Watkins Glen boys varsity cross country team placed second overall, and the Senecas' Gabe Planty was first individually, at the Southern Cayuga Dual Meet, Tuesday, Oct. 1.
Planty finished first with a 14:12.3 time. Max Evans was fourth (14:49.6), followed by Sam Thorsland (14:59.1). Steven Gublo was ninth (15:26.1). Benjamin Swinnerton finished 16th (15:42.7). Lawrence Majors took 19th (16:00.8).
For the girls, Breanna Carl was fourth (18:29.0). Makenzie Kellogg finished eighth (18:39.7).
