SPORTS RECAP: Week of 2-20-19

Wood wins sectional title in indoor track; girls win
ROCHESTER--Dundee's Matt Wood won the Section V Class D championship for the 1600 meter run, Friday, Feb. 15.
Wood won first with a time of 4:52.88. He took second in the 3200 meter with a time of 10:16.84.
Lily Hall placed second in Class D with a 34' 11.5" triple jump and third in the long jump (15'6.5").
The state qualifier for Section V indoor track is at the Rochester Institute of Technology, Feb. 22
Girls basketball
The Dundee girls varsity basketball team beat Honeoye, 59-27, Wednesday, Feb. 13.
Makenzie Cratsley scored 19 points, with 16 rebounds. Megan Sutherland added 13 points and six rebounds. Hallie Knapp posted 10 points, six rebounds, and three blocks. Mackenzie Strait netted eight points, with eight assists and five steals. Alyssah Newell earned five points and five rebounds.
The girls compete at Pavilion, Wednesday, Feb. 20 for their first sectional game.
Boys basketball
The Scots' boys varsity basketball team fell to Honeoye, Thursday, Feb. 14. The final score was 74-39.
Dundee's boys lost to Rochester Academy, Monday, Feb. 11. The final score was 61-43.
The Scots first sectional game is against Naples, Tuesday, Feb. 19. Results will be in the paper next week.

Watkins Glen boys win IAC title; two take first
DRYDEN--The Watkins Glen boys varsity basketball team won the Interscholastic Athletic Conference large division championship game, Thursday, Feb. 14.
The Senecas were matched up against the Whitney Point Eagles and secured a 62-56 win.
Isaac McIlroy recorded 23 points for Watkins and Joe Chedzoy had 15. Mitchell Pike scored nine points, Owen Scholtisek had seven and Jacob DeJong six.
The Senecas enter the sectional tournament as the sixth seed and face Tioga, Wednesday, Feb. 20.
Girls basketball
Watkins' Hannah Morse, Taylor Kelly, and Danielle Leszyk were all named to the Interscholastic Athletic Conference (IAC) large school All-Star team, Wednesday, Feb. 13. Adrienna Solomon was awarded an honorable mention.
The Senecas' girls varsity basketball team lost to Ithaca, 53-38, Monday, Feb. 11.
Morse led with 15 points. Kelly netted seven points, followed by Leszyk with five points. Kelsey Kernan posted four points. Aislinn Klemann earned a three-point shot, while Adrienna Soloman and Jena Slater each had two points.
With the loss, the Senecas' record is 15-4. Watkins will face Union Springs, Tuesday, Feb. 19 to open the sectional tournament.
Indoor track
The Senecas' Gabe Planty and Kaylana Rekczis both took first at the Section IV Division II championship, Saturday, Feb. 16.
Planty took first in the 1000 meter (2:41.56), while Rekczis placed first in the 1500 meter racewalk (8:51.04, a personal record).
Allison Gibson finished second in the high jump (4'8") and fifth in the long jump (15'0"). The Girls 4x200 relay team (Gibson, Haley Dean, Jill Cantieni, and Kai Sutterby) also broke the school record in seventh place with a 2:03.46 time.
Lawrence Majors was seventh in the 600 meter run (1:36.92, a personal record). Sutterby placed seventh in the 1000 meter run (3:33.91). Sam Thorsland took eighth in the 1600 meter run (5:13.48, a personal record).
Breanna Carl was eighth in the 1500 meter run (5:49.63). Brianna Hayes finished ninth in the long jump (13'8", a personal record).
Boys swimming
The Watkins Glen boys varsity swim team took fifth in the Section IV Class C championships, Saturday, Feb. 16.
The 200 yard freestyle relay team (Scott Brubaker, Georgio Fazzary, Clint Craven, and Nathaniel Wickham) placed third in 1:49.57. Wickham was second in the 100 yard freestyle (53.27) and third in the 50 yard freestyle (23.82).
In diving, Fazzary finished third (310.30), followed by Gabe Santos in fourth (283.75). Craven took ninth in the 200 yard freestyle (2:32.15) and 10th in the 500 yard freestyle (6:47.12). Brubaker was 10th in the 100 yard breaststroke (1:23.29).

Penn Yan basketball prepares for sectionals
PENN YAN--Penn Yan's boys varsity basketball team topped Palmyra-Macedon, 59-39, Wednesday, Feb. 13.
Conner Fingar led with 13 points and was 5-for-9 at the free-throw line. Peter Nicholson and Mason Kuver both netted 10 points. Peyton Schuck scored eight points, while Kyle Berna and Colton Smith each posted seven points.
The boys open sectionals Saturday, Feb. 23 with a 7 p.m. home game against Attica.
Girls basketball
The Lady Mustangs' varsity basketball team suffered a loss to Palmyra-Macedon, Wednesday, Feb. 13. The final score was 54-38.
Ashley Sisson posted 10 points and six rebounds. Peyton Comfort added nine points and five rebounds. Sierra Harrison scored seven points, while Jenna Curbeau had five points and 16 rebounds.
Penn Yan plays LeRoy in their first sectional game Tuesday, Feb. 19. Results will be in the paper next week.
Wrestling
Marcus Whitman/Penn Yan had two wrestlers place in the first Women's Wrestling Invitational Championship, Saturday, Feb. 16. Isabel Campbell (106) and Avery Castner (132) both finished third.

Odessa-Montour swimmers compete at sectionals
WATKINS GLEN--The Odessa-Montour boys varsity swim team took fourth in the Section IV Class C Championships, Saturday, Feb. 16.
Johnny Niedermaier and Brett Walters each earned individual third place finishes, as well as were on the third place 200 medley relay team with Caleb Thomas and Justin Ruocco. Niedermaier took third in the 200 IM (2:24.68, a personal record). He also placed fifth in the 100 fly (1:04.83, a personal record). Walters was third in the 100 backstroke (1:03.48) and fourth in the 100 freestyle (56.16).
Niedermaier and Walters were also on the fourth place 500 freestyle relay team with Ruocco and Tyler Carson. Micah Brewster and Caleb Thomas joined Justin Andrews and Noah Hollenbeck in the fourth place 200 freestyle relay team.
Brewster placed eighth in both the 200 freestyle and 500 freestyle. Thomas finished fourth in the 100 breaststroke and 14th in the 50 freestyle.
Ruocco was 10th in both the 100 freestyle (1:00.10, a personal record) and 100 backstroke (1:09.49, a personal record).
Carson was 12th in the 200 IM (2:41.56, a personal record) and 14th in the 100 backstroke (1:13.16). Noah Hollenbeck placed 13th in the 200 freestyle (2:32.31, a personal record) and 16th in the 500 freestyle. Andrews finished 15th in the 500 freestyle.
Girls basketball
The Indians' Olivia Grover and Kennedey Heichel were named to the Interscholastic Athletic Conference (IAC) south small schools All-Star team, Wednesday, Feb. 13. Sara Gardner was named to the second All-Star team, while Lexi Saunders was given an honorable mention.
Odessa-Montour's girls varsity basketball team defeated Tioga, 58-43, Monday, Feb. 11.
Grover led with 23 points and 12 rebounds. Grace Vondracek netted 14 points, with eight rebounds and five steals. Saunders posted 12 points and six steals. Kara Reese added six points, five rebounds, and four steals. Heichel contributed two points and seven assists, while Jolynn Minnier scored one point.
The Indians finished the regular season with a 13-6 record and play their first sectional game, Tuesday, Feb. 19 at Greene.

Lakers lose two games
BRADFORD--The Hammondsport boys varsity basketball team lost to Bradford, 62-54, in their third Steuben County Tournament matchup, Monday, Feb. 11. Travis Beers netted 14 points, while Parker Watson had 13 points.
The Lakers play at Notre Dame for their first sectional game, Wednesday, Feb. 20.
Girls basketball
The Hammondsport girls varsity basketball team lost to Canisteo Greenwood, 54-42, Wednesday, Feb. 13.
Ana Salom led with 11 points and eight rebounds. Hannah Hoerter netted 10 points. Jillian Underhill and Tea Flynn both scored six points. Underhill also had seven rebounds. Paula Garcia earned four points, while Maddie Sprague posted three.
