SPORTS RECAP: Week of 2-28-18

Penn Yan boys basketball advances to semifinal
PENN YAN--The Penn Yan boys varsity basketball team beat Wayland-Cohocton, 75-48, in the Section V Class B quarterfinals, Saturday, Feb. 24.
Dylan Stape led with 27 points, going 6-for-6 at the free throw line. Ben Emerson scored 24 points, including five three-point shots. Desmond Battin had nine points. Derrick Riviello and Cade Curbeau both added four points. Peyton Schuck, Devon Gerhardt, and Austin Lafferty each earned two points. Conner Fingar scored one point.
The Mustangs, seeded second, played in the sectional semifinals, Tuesday, Feb. 27, against Livonia, seeded third. Game results were not available before press time.
Penn Yan defeated Greece-Olympia, 69-60, in the opening round of sectionals, Wednesday, Feb. 21.
Battin earned 30 points, with five three-point baskets. Stape followed with 23 points, going 7-for-10 at the free throw line. Emerson scored seven points, while Schuck added five. Curbeau posted three points. Brennan Prather earned one.
Girls basketball
The Penn Yan girls varsity basketball team lost to Dansville in the first round of the Class B sectionals, Tuesday, Feb. 20. The final score was 60-46.
Sydney Bloom led with 21 points, followed by Ashley Sisson with 14 points and 14 rebounds. Joddie Decker posted seven points and eight rebounds. Jenna Curbeau and Peyton Comfort each added two points. Curbeau also had 12 rebounds. Logan Broome earned six rebounds.

Lakers win first sectional game, lose second
PRATTSBURGH--The Hammondsport boys varsity basketball team fell to Prattsburgh in the Section V Class D2 quarterfinals, Friday, Feb. 23. The final score was 101-51.
Dillan Conley had 14 points, two assists, and five steals. Brayden Whitcomb posted 13 points and seven rebounds. Hammondsport ended the season with a 10-12 record.
The Lakers topped Romulus, 52-49, in the first round of sectionals, Tuesday, Feb. 20.
Parker Watson led with 18 points, five rebounds, two steals, and two assists. Whitcomb posted 12 points and 12 rebounds.
Girls basketball
The Hammondsport girls varsity basketball team lost to Genesee Valley, 53-32, in the first round of the Class D2 Sectionals, Wednesday, Feb. 21.
Destiny Hammond led with 15 points. Maddie Sprague added seven points, while McKenzie Boscoe posted five points, three assists, and four rebounds. TeĆ” Flynn earned four points, nine assists, and 12 rebounds. Amanda O'Donnell had one point.

Dundee takes third at sectionals
The Dundee varsity cheerleading team took third place in the Section V competition at the Rochester Institute of Technology last weekend. The Lady Scots competed against 11 other schools in their division (Division 2 Small D). Their total score was 69.3.
Dundee falls in sectionals
Scottsville--The Dundee girls varsity basketball team fell to Wheatland-Chili in the first round of the Section V Class D1 games, Tuesday, Feb. 20. The final score was 68-27.
Individual stats were not provided by either team.
Wheatland-Chili was the top seed in the D1 bracket. They advanced to the sectional final by also beating Kendall and York.

Watkins girls advance to semifinals; runners qualify
WATKINS GLEN--The Watkins Glen girls varsity basketball team beat Elmira Notre Dame, 68-40, in the Section IV Class C quarterfinals, Saturday, Feb. 24.
Taylor Kelly led with 21 points and five steals. Clara Chedzoy posted 14 points, five rebounds, three steals, and two assists. Ryanna LaMoreaux earned 10 points, six rebounds, and three assists. Hannah Morse and Emmie Bond each scored eight points. Morse also had seven rebounds, six steals, and four assists, while Bond had eight rebounds and four steals.
The Senecas advance to the sectional semifinals against Moravia, Wednesday, Feb. 28.
Indoor track
Watkins Glen runners Aaron Planty and Gabe Planty both qualified, Saturday, Feb. 24, for the state tournament with their second and third place finishes.
At the state qualifier, Aaron finished second in the 1600 (4:31.72), while Gabe was third (4:31.82).
"They both worked extremely hard this season with the goal of making states," said Coach Kelly Sterner. "Aaron gets to compete in the 1600 meters. Gabe, running the 1600, will be competing in the intersectional relay. It is made up of today's third-place finishers from the 300, 600, 1000, and the 1600, which will be representing Section IV."
The state tournament will be held Saturday, March 3, on Staten Island.
Also at the qualifier, Isobel Scheffey took fifth in the 300 meters (44.69, beating her own school record) and ninth in the 55 meters (7:94). Allison Gibson placed eighth in the 55 meters (7:92). Megan Hazlitt was 17th in the 600 meters (1:54.75). Breanna Carl finished 19th in the 1000 meters (3:49.32, a personal record). Josh Updyke took 20th in the 55 meters (7.18).
Boys basketball
The Senecas' boys varsity basketball team fell to Unadilla Valley in the first round of the Class C Sectionals, Tuesday, Feb. 20. The final score was 72-52.

Odessa girls fall to Greene in sectional game
ODESSA--The Odessa-Montour girls varsity basketball team lost to Greene in the Section IV Class C quarterfinal, Saturday, Feb. 24. The final score was 57-53.
Gillian Clark led Odessa with 17 points. Nakiaha Robinson posted 12 points. Olivia Grover had 10, while Sara Gardner scored nine points. Kennedey Heichel recorded three points. Grace Vondracek had two.
Odessa led 25-20 at halftime and 39-36 after the third quarter. The Indians were 12-for-31 at the foul line, which Coach Greg Gavich said, "That really really hurt and was the difference in the game.".
