Sports Recap: Week of 4/23/14

Watkins Glen golfers lose to Lansing 223-228
WATKINS GLEN—The Watkins Glen boys varsity golf team lost to Lansing, Monday, April 21.  The final score was 223-228.
Keith Rekczis led with a low of 39 points.  Mitch Mangus and Trentin Barber each golfed a 45, while Luke Flahive scored 49.
Baseball
The Watkins Glen varsity baseball team lost to Tioga, 10-5, Monday, April 21.
Brennon DeMeritt went 2-for-4, with three RBIs, John Smith and Jared Carocci each had one hit.
Coach Jerry Carocci said, “Brendan Hunter pitched an outstanding game against a very good hitting team.  We just had a few defensive mistakes and gave up some runs we shouldn’t have.”
Girls golf
The Watkins Glen girls varsity golf team competed at Tomassos, Monday, April 21.  Watkins scored 228 points, the third lowest out of five teams.
Halle Phillips led with a low of 49 points, followed by Hanley Elliott with a career low of 54.  Courtney Irwin golfed a 58.  Cheyenne Stansfield had a 67.

Odessa-Montour baseball and softball falls to Edison
ODESSA—Odessa’s varsity baseball team lost to Thomas A. Edison, Monday, April 21.  The final score was 3-0.
Odessa had four hits.  Dylan Porter, Ryan Taylor, Adam Gifford, and Chris Foote were all 1-for-3.
“O-M had bases loaded in the bottom of the fourth inning with one out and couldn’t get the big hit needed,” said Coach Brad Clark.
Odessa’s record stands at 1-4.
The Odessa-Montour varsity baseball team lost to Spencer-Van Etten, Monday, April 14.  The final score was 7-3.
Softball
The Indians’ varsity softball team fell to Thomas A. Edison, 20-1, Monday, April 21.
The Odessa-Montour girls varsity softball team lost to Spencer-Van Etten, 12-3, Monday, April 14.
Pitcher Maddie Lodge had four strikeouts, five walks, and 10 hits.  Brianna Struble, Jordan Little, and Jordan Zoeke all scored for Odessa, while Zoeke and Struble got the only two hits for the Indians.
“I’m very proud of the way that we are playing and defensively we are doing well,” said Coach Valerie Cannon.  “With a young team like this we have to take one step at a time and gradually we are getting there.”
Tennis
The Odessa-Montour varsity tennis team lost to Southern Cayuga, 5-2, Monday, April 21.
In singles, Curtis Harris defeated his opponent, 6-1, 6-4.  Frank Carson won, 7-6 (7-3), 6-3.

Dundee girls beat Bloomfield, 10-6; baseball falls
DUNDEE—The Lady Scots varsity softball team topped Bloomfield in a home game, Monday, April 21.  The final score was 10-6.
Coach Courtney Eddinger said pitcher Kailee Morrison had “a great game” with 10 strikeouts and four walks.  Tristine Dombroski was 3-for-3, with two singles and a triple.  Liz Curran, Sam Clark, Ayla Lane, and Olivia Taylor were all 2-for-4.  Curran also had two RBIs.
Baseball
The Dundee varsity baseball team lost to Bloomfield, Monday, April 21.  The final score was 15-10.
Colin Prior was 2-for-3, with two runs and three RBIs.  Justin Neu scored two runs.  Bobby Strait went 2-for-4, with two runs.

Penn Yan lacrosse edges Canandaigua in overtime
PENN YAN—The Penn Yan boys varsity lacrosse team beat Canandaigua in overtime, 11-10, Friday, April 18. At halftime the score was 5-5. The Mustangs then jumped to a 9-7 lead to end the third, only to have Canandaigua score three in the fourth to tie it at 10-10. The Mustangs added one goal in overtime to close out the game.
Bradley Voigt had three goals and one assist. Sean Emerson also recorded three goals. Austin Fingar had two goals and one assist. Rion Davison, Sam Dirisio and Ben Covert all added one goal each.  Goalie Brandon Maciejewski made nine saves.
The Mustangs fell to Lakeland/Pana, 11-10, Tuesday, April 15.
Davison scored four points and two assists. Voigt and Sean Emerson both had two goals and one assist. Fingar and Dirisio each scored once. Covert added one assist. Maciejewski had 17 saves in goal.
Baseball
The Penn Yan varsity baseball team lost to McQuaid, 13-2, Tuesday, April 15.  The two schools competed while in Florida over spring break.  John Martisch and Lukas Larham both had doubles for the Mustangs.
Penn Yan also beat Granby, 11-10, Monday, April 14.  Jon McKay and Jordan Bush each had run scoring doubles.  Alex McKay, Derek Sisson, and Larham pitched.
Track and field
The Penn Yan varsity track and field teams competed at the Waterloo Spring Sensation meet, Thursday, April 17.
Heather Andersen took first place in the 400 meter dash with a time of 1:01.3 and third in the 800 meter run with 2:28.02. Evelynn Pinneo placed fourth in the 2000 meter steeplechase (8:30.88).  Hannah Gaston took seventh place in the triple jump (29’75”)  and the 400 meter hurdles (1:15.96).  The 4x400 meter relay team finished in seventh.
For the boys, Peter Tomlinson was sixth in 3000 meter steeplechase (11:43.06).  The boys’ 4x100 meter relay team was eighth.

Lakers top Lima Christian
HAMMONDSPORT—The Hammondsport varsity softball team topped Lima Christian, 16-1, Monday, April 21.
Coach Lynn Binnert said Victoria Yahn “went the distance on the mound with 10 strikeouts, giving up only one hit and had two RBIs.”  Shanea Campbell was 3-for-3, with a double and scored four runs for the Lakers.
Olivia Makarick was 2-for-3 with a triple, scored two runs, and had two RBIs.  Aly Binnert was 2-for-2, scored two runs, and had an RBI.  Korynne House, Jillian Farmer, and Sydney McGinn each had one RBI.
The girls play at Arkport on Wednesday and are at home against Prattsburgh on Thursday.
