SPORTS RECAP: Week of 6-6-18

Penn Yan moves to state semifinal with overtime win
BUFFALO--The Penn Yan Mustangs defeated Section VI's Akron, Saturday, June 2 at All-High Stadium in Buffalo. The game went to overtime with Austin Blumbergs scoring the game winner, bringing the final score to 12-11.
The young roster of Penn Yan was able to avenge the loss to Akron last year that went to double overtime (10-9). Freshmen Ayden Mowry and Devon Gerhardt combined for five of Penn Yan's goals, and sophomore goalie Jeff Kinyoun made eight saves.
Overall, Blumbergs recorded three goals and four assists in the game. Mowry followed with three goals and two assists and Conner Fingar added three goals and one assist. Gerhardt ended the day with two goals and one assist. Chase Blumbergs scored once and assisted once, while Dylan Stape also had an assist.
Penn Yan now moves to the state semifinal game against Section 4's Chenango Forks, Wednesday, June 6 at 4 p.m. The game will be played at St. John Fisher College. Chenango Forks is 19-1 on the season, defeating Christian Brothers Academy 9-8 to face Penn Yan.
The Mustangs defeated Aquinas in the Section V Class D championship game, Wednesday, May 30. The victory brings the Mustangs to 23 Section V championship titles.
The final score Wednesday evening was 8-6, with Penn Yan recording five of the goals in the first quarter. They scored one goal in each of the remaining quarters to bring the total to eight.
Fingar had two goals and two assists in the title game. Austin Blumbergs also had two goals, while Colton Smith, Gerhardt, Stape and Mowry each had one. Smith also contributed an assist.
Goaltending, Kinyoun made 10 saves.
Fingar was named the All Tournament Most Valuable Player. Also on the All Tournament Team were Smith, Mowry, Dakota Miller and Kinyoun.
Girls lacrosse
The second-seeded Penn Yan Lady Mustangs fell to the number four seeded Palmyra-Macedon Red Raiders, Tuesday, May 29. The final score was 12-6 in the Section V Class D title game.
Pal-Mac jumped out to an early lead scoring five goals to Penn Yan's one in the first half and then followed that up with seven goals in the second half to Penn Yan's five to take the win.
Named to the All Tournament Team from Penn Yan were: senior attack Elissa Callaway, senior attack Alli Olevnik, senior midfielder Sydney Bloom, senior midfielder Hannah Keech and junior goalie Alexandra Cox.
Track and field
Penn Yan was represented at the Section V state qualifier, Friday, June 1.
Maci Nicholson took first in the 2000 meter steeplechase (7:38.64). Emma Harling placed second in the shot put (35'3.75") and sixth in the discus (93'3"). Joddie Decker was fourth in the 3000 meter run (11:12.76).
Ben DeMoras was third in the 1600 meter run (4:38.40) and fourth in the 3200 meter run (10:33.37).

Dundee Scots compete at state qualifier
CALEDONIA--Dundee varsity track and field athletes competed at the Section V state qualifier, held at Caledonia-Mumford, Friday, June 1.
William Hall placed fourth in the long jump (20'11.50") and eighth in the triple jump (38'5"). Matt Wood took sixth in the 800 meter run (2:07.66). Preston Cole was seventh in the shot put (40'0.25"), while Leif Hoyt was seventh in the discus (122'4").
Lily Hall was eighth in the triple jump (33'0").

O-M's Clark competes at states; Elliott takes second
LONG ISLAND--Odessa-Montour's Gillian Clark competed for Section 4 at the state championships, Saturday, June 2, and Sunday, June 3.
The Section IV team finished fifth overall. Clark posted a 93 in both rounds she played.
Track and field
The Odessa-Montour varsity track and field athletes competed at the Section 4 State Qualifiers, held at Union Endicott, Wednesday, May 30, and Thursday, May 31.
Zach Elliott was second in the discus (148'11"), third in the shot put (51'1"). Payden Grover took 10th in the high jump (5'8"). Andy Hartford placed 14th in the pole vault (10'6"), while Eric Rumsey took 14th in the discus (114'2").
For the girls, Nadia Simpson placed fourth in the 100 meter dash (13.16). Kennedey Heichel was fifth in the 100 meter hurdles (16.72), fifth in the pole vault (9'6"), and 15th in the 400 meter hurdles (1:15.60). Hannah Chapman finished 14th in the high jump (4'6"). Camille Sgrecci was 19th in the 400 meter hurdles (1:16.97).
Hailey Perraut was sixth in the pentathlon, sixth in the pentathlon 100 meter hurdles (19.67), sixth in the pentathlon high jump (1.32 meters), sixth in the pentathlon shot put (7.59 meters), sixth in the pentathlon 800 meter run (2:41.97), and seventh in the pentathlon long jump (4.13 meters).

Watkins Glen athletes compete in postseason
ENDICOTT--The Watkins Glen varsity track and field athletes competed at the Section 4 State Qualifiers, held at Union Endicott, Wednesday, May 30, and Thursday, May 31.
Isobel Scheffey was fifth in the 400 meter run (1:01.57), and improved upon her school record. Gabe Planty finished fourth in the 1600 meter run (4:30.18). Aaron Planty was 13th in the 1600 meter run (4:41.76) and 15th in the 800 meter run (2:04.68).
Girls golf
Watkins' Hanley Elliott and Gabi Decker competed for Section IV at the state championships, Saturday, June 2, and Sunday, June 3.
The Section IV team placed fifth overall. Elliott recorded a 91 and a 95, while Decker posted 112 and 112.
