State approves Odessa-Montour project

ODESSA—The New York State Education Department was the final agency to approve Odessa-Montour’s district wide renovation project, Wednesday, Jan. 13.
Superintendent Jim Frame said the goal of the $10 million Excel project is to have renovations completed in September of this year.  He said bid packages are now being put together and bidding will take place next month.  Frame said construction should then start in March.
The main focus of the renovation project is to make the school buildings more energy efficient.  Frame said new windows and doors would be installed that would create significant energy savings.  Heating systems would also be upgraded.
He added the most noticeable part of the project would be changes to where the B.C. Cate playground and parking lot are located.  The project also includes new indoor and outdoor concession stands and renovations to the auditorium at the main school building.
“The nuts and bolts of the project, you wouldn’t see,” said Frame.
He explained the project came about as Excel funds were available.  Frame added that the project puts no burden on the taxpayers, because it is an Excel project.  He said Excel allows the school to do something outside of the district’s available budget.  Frame added that the renovation project will also create jobs.
“People may have to bear with us over use of facilities during the summer,” said Frame, as that is when work is expected to take place.
