State has plans for Dundee school project

DUNDEE—The Building Project committee reported to the Dundee Central School board. Phase One of the project has been submitted to the state education department. This is related to masonry work on the building exterior. Superintendent Nancy Zimar said the board hopes for a quick turnaround with a start in spring 2010. Phase Two is equipment, univents, electric and work on the track and football field. Zimar said planning is “sort of ahead of schedule” on Phase Two.
In other business:
• Board members heard a report of activities of the  National Honor Society. The group is sponsoring a blood drive and canned food drive and will be attending the ARC Christmas party. After school tutoring for junior high school students and serving as “Huggers” at the H1N1 clinic are also on their schedule.
• The Student Council proposal for a student representative to the board of education was on the agenda. Following the meeting, Zimar said the process requires a vote by the community which would be at the district annual meeting in May. The representative would be a junior or senior in good standing. They would be required to submit a petition containing 25 signatures and two teacher recommendations. Applicants would also submit a blind essay to the student council which would select three to be sent to the board of education. The board of education would select the candidate from the three essays submitted to them.
• Two district policies were approved. Board president Joseph Capurso said the board will review eight policies per meeting starting in February 2010.
• Zimar reviewed the district Shared Decision Making Plan.
• Ring spoke to the board about a new requirement for a Compliance Officer for Medicaid Information.
• The board accepted the Yates County Community Services contract in the amount $35,400, which will help pay for the school resource officer.
• Steven Webb was congratulated for two recent honors; his selection as Ontario Honda Section V/Class D Offensive Player of the year for the second year in a row. Webb was also named to the Democrat & Chronicle All Greater Rochester Football Team.” Webb was the first Dundee player to make the team which consists of football players from all schools in Section V. Schools sizes range from AA to Class D. Webb and Ryan Ballard were selected to the Daily Messenger All League First Team All Stars.
• Dundee Mega Scots for December are Katherine Camacho, Deniece Riek, Ester Ninos and Casey Brooks.
• Several elementary students were recognized for outstanding character education including Calley Knapp, Branden Edmister, Jay Chen, Lisa Ayers, Cassidy Wright-Dutton, Ashley Sheppard, Matthew Pollack, Matthew McFall, Ariel Kepoo, Thomas Cleveland, Crystal Chen and Michael Trask.
The next meeting of the Dundee Central School District board of education will be at 7 p.m. Jan. 14, 2010 in the public meeting room at the school.
