Tony Stewart and Lewis Hamilton Car Swap Watkings Glen

Stewart and Hamilton swap cars at Watkins Glen

WATKINS GLEN—A unique racing car swap entertained more than a thousand people in the rain, fog and cold at Watkins Glen International on Tuesday, June 14.
Tony Stewart brought his NASCAR Sprint Cup car and Formula 1 driver Lewis Hamilton brought his championship McLaren-Mercedes MP4-23 car to the track for the Mobil 1 Racing Car Swap. Other than during vintage events at WGI, it was the first time in 30 years a Formula 1 car has been on the Watkins Glen track.
Each of the drivers took laps in their own cars, then the trades began. The cars are drastically different from each other in size and appearance. The Sprint Cup car has the appearance of a stock car while the Formula 1 car is a low-profile, sleek, open-wheel race car. The cup car weighs about three times that of a F1 machine. Both cars were on rain tires due to weather.
Stewart and Hamilton took turns around the course, gaining speed with each lap. In the media center after the road course ride, the pair answered questions about the experience. Stewart said, “I enjoyed the long course. There are some really cool corners. I would really like to see us have the opportunity to do the long course.” Stewart said he had used a simulator to become familiar with the some of the differences in the F1 car. Stewart said, “I know I didn’t reach the car’s potential. It is incredible how well these cars handle.” Hamilton said, “ I felt like a kid again today. The sound and the power of the car was fantastic.”
