Students get festive with music, giving

WATKINS GLEN—Christmas and the holiday season can be a time of songs and celebrations for students, but also a time for giving.
Watkins Glen elementary students are doing some of both.  Students in the New Heights Dance Theatre program gave two performances of “The Nutcracker,” Friday Dec. 4 at the elementary school.  Elementary Principal Rod Weeden explained the students will be performing this at the Clemens Center in Elmira.  He said elementary and middle school students are involved, from both Watkins Glen and Odessa-Montour.
Weedon said this is an annual event now, as part of the artist in residence program.  He explained the school brings in the performers to do “The Nutcracker” to incorporate dance into the curriculum.  This year, it is called “Nutcracker Motion.”  Weedon said each year the performers give it “a twist to make it different.”
“Nutcracker in Motion,” with the Watkins and O-M performers, will be at the Clemens Center, Saturday, Dec. 19, 2 p.m. and 7 p.m.
The third graders at Watkins Glen are holding their annual food drive for the Watkins pantry.  Weedon said the deadline for donations is Dec. 18.  He explained the grade lavel has been doing this for at least three years now.
The elementary school will also be holding its holiday concert and art show, Dec. 17 at 5:30 p.m.  Weedon said the Pre-K concert will be Dec. 23 at 10 a.m.  The middle school concert will be Tuesday, Dec. 15 at 6:30 p.m. and the high school concert will be Thursday, Dec. 10 at 7:30 p.m.  Weedon added the school choruses performed at the Watkins Glen village Christmas event as well.
At the Odessa-Montour School District, the Hanlon Holiday Concert will be Wednesday, Dec. 16 at 7:30 p.m.  This is rescheduled from the original Dec. 9 date.
