BARRINGTON—The Windmill Farm and Craft Market opens for its 26th season this Saturday, April 27.
The Windmill, located at 3900 State Route 14A, features some 200 vendors, selling a variety of produce, crafts, furniture, flowers, toys, clothing and food. It even offers entertainment and horse and buggy rides. The Windmill has become a prominent tourist attraction, with a weekly attendance exceeding 8,000 to 10,000 people.
Hours are from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Saturdays, plus Memorial Day, the Fourth of July and Labor Day. The season runs until Saturday, Dec. 14. Parking and attendance is free.
The Windmill was started by Bill and Ruth Gunderman and Pat and Ron Nissen after visiting a farm market in Pennsylvania. The original opening day was June 27, 1986, with 64 vendors in two buildings and 25 outside vendors. Over the years more buildings were added to the site, now totaling four plus numerous exterior shops. In 2004, a New York State Matching Fund grant was awarded to enclose the produce area and former hay auction barn, thus making more permanent inside vending areas.
Several special events are also hosted at The Windmill, including the Custom and Classic Car Shows May 11 and Oct. 12 The shows run from noon to 3 p.m. There are no classes and awards are given to the top 46 vehicles.
