Track gets new owner, new name

DUNDEE--Tyler Siri, 40, of Horseheads announced last week he has purchased Black Rock Speedway in Dundee from former owner Dean Hoag. With the purchase, Siri announced several changes, including the name, with the track now being called Outlaw Speedway. The track was previously known as both Black Rock Speedway and Yates County Speedway. Hoag has owned the track since 2005.
Siri discussed the purchase during a meeting at the Dundee American Legion Saturday morning, Feb. 6. Siri is the owner of Superior Crushing in Horseheads, where he also resides. During the meeting, he noted his experiences as both a racer and a business owner should help the track be successful under his ownership.
"The biggest thing here is I'm a racer, I've been a business owner for 21 years, so I know both sides of business and racing," Siri said. "[...] Obviously, I spent a lot of money to buy this place. I'm 40 years old, so I'm going to be here for a long time. We will have a place to race forever. My son will be 21 this month, and he will probably take it over when I'm done."
The track itself will receive an overhaul under Siri's ownership, as he is going to be putting clay on the track later this spring.
"I am going to put clay onto the track this year," Siri said. "We need to let the spring season get away from us a little bit. Hopefully it is dry and we get some warm weather. Maybe within a month or so, sometime in May, I'm looking to put some clay on the track."
In addition to the Clay, Siri said he will work to clean up the facility in an effort to increase attendance.
"There are a lot of improvements this year that I'm going to do," Siri said. "[This] place is big and needs some work. It needs some TLC and it's going to take some time. It's not going to happen overnight, but we have started doing stuff already [...] [Racers] are going to love to call this [their] Friday night home. It is going to be exciting."
Siri said there will be some schedule changes, noting the dates will stay the same, but there will be a couple of classes that will have to change due to conflicts of interest with some of the racing groups. In addition to the weekly divisions at the track, he mentioned the speedway will be adding Crate Late Models as well. Siri also noted the payouts will be increased to make it a little easier on the racers.
"I hope everybody is really happy with the payouts," Siri said. "I know as a racer, this is an expensive game. It takes a lot of time and a lot of money, but you can't give the farm away either. The track has to survive and pay the bills. I came up with this purse that would be in mind of [the racers] and myself as the owner."
He said next year they are looking at getting World of Outlaws Sprint Car Racing there, adding they will need to put new grandstands in order to accommodate the crowd. Siri noted any profits the track makes under his control will go toward additional improvements.
"This racetrack is going to be self-sufficient on its own," Siri said. "If I need to put money into the racetrack, that's not a problem, but I don't need to take any money out of the racetrack to survive on it or to go racing myself. Everything that this racetrack is going to generate is going right back into the track."
