FINGER LAKES--The villages of Penn Yan, Dundee and Bath have officially declared Trick or Treat hours to run between the times of 6 and 8 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 31. The village of Hammondsport will have Trick or Treat hours from 6 to 7 p.m., while the village of Watkins Glen, Montour Falls and Odessa also run from 6 to 8 p.m. Residents are requested to turn on their front porch lights to receive children who are out trick or treating and to turn the lights off when it concludes. Drivers are advised to be cautious while children are out walking village streets, and trick or treaters are reminded to avoid wearing dark clothing in order to be more visible to drivers.
The annual Dundee Halloween Parade and Party will also be held Oct. 31. The parade starts at Five Star Bank at 1 p.m. and will proceed up to the school gymnasium. Costumes will be judged and prizes awarded by age groups. Candy, cider, donuts and apples will be given out at the party. Later that night, the Save-A-Lot parking lot will once again be the site for the Trunk-or-Treat event from 6 to 8 p.m.
Sheriff Ron Spike advises residents to be on alert for drunk drivers, noting 199 people were killed by drunk drivers on Halloween night between 2009 and 2013 across the U.S. Over the last five Halloween nights during this same time period, 43 percent of all motor vehicle deaths across the country involved drunk driving.
"Remember, think, don't drink and drive this Halloween weekend," Spike said. "Stay safe while protecting your neighbors by making a plan to get home without getting behind the steering wheel if you've been drinking."
