Trump, Sanders win tri-county area primaries

TRI-COUNTY AREA--The Republican and Democratic Party Presidential Primaries were held throughout New York State Tuesday, April 19. Even though Republican candidate Donald Trump and Democratic candidate Hillary Clinton were the day's winners statewide, Trump and Bernie Sanders were the winning primary candidates in Yates and the surrounding counties.
While Republican voters in the tri-county area had their choice reflected in the final results, area Democrats showed a stronger support for Democratic candidate Bernie Sanders than Clinton.
In Yates County, Sanders took 669 votes (54.79 percent), topping Clinton's 552 (45.21 percent). On the Republican ticket, Trump held a firm lead with 1,296 votes (51.78 percent) over fellow Republican John Kasich's 799 votes (31.92 percent). Candidates Ted Cruz and Ben Carson (who has dropped out of the race) received 369 (14.74 percent) and 39 (1.56 percent) votes respectively.
In Schuyler County, Sanders again took the lead with 818 votes (62.49 percent) over Clinton's 491 (37.51). Trump secured a majority of the vote with 938 votes (52.34 percent) over Kasich's 431 (24.05 percent). Cruz and Carson rounded out the bottom of the Republican ticket with 384 (21.43 percent) and 39 (2.18 percent) votes respectively.
The story was the same in Steuben County, with Sanders scoring 2,709 (57.9 percent) Democratic votes over Clinton's 1,970 (42.1 percent). Trump had 5,957 votes (53.76 percent) to Kasich's 2,616 (23.61 percent). Cruz and Carson had 2,261 (20.4 percent) and 247 (2.23 percent) votes respectively.
