TRI-COUNTY AREA (11/5/15)―The Yates, Steuben and Schuyler County Boards of Elections each released the unofficial results of Tuesday, Nov. 3's general election. The results for the area's contested elections are as follows:
At the Yates County level, Republican Lois E. Hall won her bid for county clerk with 2,252 votes (69.12 percent) over Virginia A. Fenton's 1,004 (30.82). Republican challenger Brian C. Champlin also unseated incumbent Shamrock party candidate Ronald E. Dailey with 2,160 votes (71.5 percent) against Dailey's 857 votes (28.37 percent).
Republicans swept the contested Legislative District III (Milo) race. Incumbent Mark W. Morris led with 598 votes (19.96 percent), followed by challenger P. Earle Gleason's 585 votes (19.53 percent), incumbent Leslie H. Church's 555 votes (18.52 percent) and Daniel W. Banach's 481 votes (16.05 percent). Conservative and Reform Party challenger Bill Laffin failed to win a seat with 381 votes (12.72 percent), along with Reform Party candidate Marsha Devine's 238 votes (7.94 percent) and Independent Voice candidate Robert H. Schwarting's 157 votes (5.24 percent).
Republican incumbents also won in Legislative District IV (Barrington and Starkey). William R. Holgate led the group with 377 votes (30.65 percent), followed by Bonnie L. Percy with 373 votes (30.33 percent) and James P. Multer with 305 votes (24.8 percent). Integrity challenger Jack D. Ossont failed to win a seat with 175 votes (14.23 percent).
The town of Milo's contested town council race also saw the reelection of Republican incumbents. Dale Hallings led with 633 votes (38.13 percent), followed by Arden G. Sorensen Jr.'s 531 votes (31.99 percent). Conservative and Reform party Challenger Mark W. Morris failed to win a seat with 280 votes (16.87 percent), as well as Democratic challenger Valerie J. Brechko's 216 votes (13.01 percent).
Torrey's contested town council race saw Republican incumbent Linda K. Francisco unseated by Democratic challenger Peter Martini and Action for Torrey's Lawrence Martin. Martini led the group with 199 votes (43.36 percent), followed by Martin's 160 votes (34.86 percent). Francisco accumulated 98 total votes (21.35 percent).
Republican Brian A. Bootes won an unexpired term seat on the Potter town council with 150 votes (85.71 percent), beating the Reform Party's Terry L. Button who had 25 votes (14.29 percent).
The town of Italy's three proposals to lengthen the terms for town supervisor, town clerk/tax collector and town highway superintendent from two to four years all failed to be approved by voters.
In Steuben County, incumbent Republican John Webster was reelected to his town of Urbana supervisor seat with 266 votes (57.08 percent) over 200 write-in votes (42.92 percent). Incumbent Republican Wayne Highway Superintendent E. David Bauer also won reelection to his seat with 143 votes (63.27 percent) over People 4 Change challenger Charles E. Swarthout's 82 votes (36.28 percent).
Voters also elected four justices to the state supreme court's seventh district. Each Republican candidate won seats. Judy Sinclair led with 7,064 votes (19.89 percent), followed by Craig Doran's 6,786 votes (19.11 percent), James J. Piampiano's 6,708 votes (18.89 percent) and Bill Taylor's 6,705 votes (18.88 percent). Democrat Matthew D. Nafus failed to win a seat with 2,393 votes (6.74 percent), along with fellow party members JoAnne Leegant's 2,004 votes (5.64 percent), Deborah A. Indivino's 1,935 votes (5.45 percent) and Ella Van Loon's 1,901 votes (5.35 percent).
At the Schuyler County level, incumbent Republican Dennis A. Fagan defeated his Democratic challenger Sandra J. Rhodes 272 votes (66.02 percent) to 140 (33.98 percent).
At the town level, Republican Gary B. Conklin won the Reading town supervisor seat over Democrat William "Buzz" DeSarno with 350 votes (70 percent) to DeSarno's 149 (29.80 percent). Republican Stephen L. Miller led the Reading town council race with 344 votes (39.18 percent), and was elected along with incumbent write-in candidate Robert Everett who had 217 votes (24.72 percent). Democrats Tamra K. Jankowski and Gita L. Devi each failed to win a seat with 175 (19.93 percent) and 142 votes (16.17 percent) respectively. Incumbent Republican Town Clerk and Tax Collector Alice W. Conklin also retained her seat with 326 votes (65.86 percent) over Democratic challenger Muriel Osborne-Petryk's 169 (34.14 percent).
Hector saw a tightly contested town council race, in which the Republican candidates ultimately won out. William T. Preston led with 697 votes (26.21 percent), followed by John R. White, who had 670 votes (25.2 percent). Democrat Justin S. Boyette failed to win a seat with 658 votes (24.75 percent), along with fellow party member Debra Reid, who garnered 632 votes (23.77 percent).
Tyrone's town council race saw incumbent Republican Edward Perry and Voice of the People candidate Thomas Allen beat out Serve You's challenger Joe T. Sevier for the two available positions. Perry received the most votes with 198 (40.41 percent), followed by Allen's 182 (37.14 percent). Sevier received 110 votes (22.45 percent).
Catharine's incumbent Democrat Town Supervisor John VanSoest won reelection to his position with 149 votes (60.57 percent), over Republican challenger Richard J. Lewis, who had 97 votes (39.43 percent).
