Van Harp wins seat by one vote
SCHUYLER COUNTY--Official vote totals have been posted by the Schuyler County Board of Elections and they show Van Harp beat Joseph Campbell by one vote (313-312) for the District 2 legislative seat. Harp was the Republican incumbent while Campbell was the Democratic challenger. On election night the race was close, 295-291, favoring Harp. With the addition of absentee and affidavit votes it brought the total to the one vote difference that ultimately decided the election. Campbell sent a letter to the editor Tuesday, Nov. 21 conceding the election. "There were many factors at play in the election that resulted in a one vote margin with Van Harp leading the race," Campbell said. "While there was one ballot that could conceivably have been argued in court, it would have been a long, drawn out process and it was an extreme long shot." He continued, "In the interest of not putting the voters in Legislative District 2 through more anguish over the election, I have decided not to pursue litigation." Legislators serve four-year staggered terms.
